get the 10fp.... the 26" barrel length on the varmint will make the barrel kind of off balance and awkward... id get the shorter barrel... 26" is not necessary
plus its cheaper |

10FP, I owned a 110FP in 308, wish I still had it.

Sorry, I didn't vote. What are you going to do with whichever rifle you choose? If you aren't going to walk around with it much and intend on shooting from a bench or over a p-dog town and you reload- personally, I'd go with the 12. But, if you want something that's a little more to the tune of "general purpose" and don't wanna be bothered with the extra length, weight, imbalance- then the 10 would be up your alley. Heard great things about both of 'em. Good luck, and safe shooting!

I'm looking mainly for a target/benchrest gun. My dad & I reload and we like to see how close we can group the shots. So it looks like the 12 is better for that?

Well... again, that would purely be MY preference. The 10 may do just as well- but I was brought up with some seriously old school teachers who preached that long and heavy bbls are what'll give you optimum benefits from a wider range of powders when considering burn rates. All that is still over my head as far as the science and mathematics goes- but I have become more comfortable with the longer and heavier bbls for bench and varmint shooting when it comes down to tweaking my loads.

The 12 is probably the better target rifle.

yep
10-96 isn't being a 10-96 when he says the 12 will be the better target gun I have a model 12 and that thing is a tack driver. It's a 22-250 and it will shoot half inch groups with cheap Winchester white box ammo all day long. My shooting partner has the same gun and has had the same results. If you want a gun to shoot little groups with the 12 is the way to go.

12fv if you're target shooting.

For benchrest and reaching way out there the 12 seems like the best choice, BUT the 10 isn't far behind.

Currently own a 12BVSS which is just like a 12FVSS except with a laminated wood stock instead of plastic. If I bought a Savage again I would probably try the 10FP. The barrel on my 12BVSS has a tendency to foul quickly. Would like to try a non-stainless.
The 10FP still has a heavy barrel. Unless shooting at extremely long distances having the 26" barrel with the 12FVSS will not be a great overwhelming advantage. My 700LTR with 20" barrel routinely shoots more accurately than my 26" rifles.

My dad has a 12FV in 223. Avoid Savage's plastic stock, get the hardwood or laminated instead. The plastic stock is flexible enough that the barrel's weight will settle down onto the stock and make it impossible to free float the barrel. We ended up replacing my dad's stock with one from Boyds. After bedding the action and floating the barrel it's so accurate it's boring, 1/2 MOA or better is typical with handloads.

ive owned one of those 12 series tube-action rifles. They are very accurate, but with a scope, they weigh nearly 15lbs. Not a gun you could take hunting for the weekend.

12 Fv
I have a 12 FV in 22-250, a 12 FVSS in 308, an 11G in 308 for hunting, and a Savage/Stevens 200 in 223. I love all 4 of them but for long range accuracy, I would go with the 12 FV. If I could figure out how to post pictures, I would show you a 5 round group from the 12 FVSS 308 at a 110m that is one big hole.
