-Of course the 9mm (Luger ctg. and variants) will take a mountain line....of any size. Quick, too.

Heck there is at least one recorded case where a lady heading for the potty one dark night (or was she in her tent and had an unwelcome visitor? I forget.) Killed a full-grown male African lion with one shot from a .22 long rifle revolver.

Wasn't there a man (older) up in one of the North Western States (Washington Islands maybe?) that got jumped from behind by a cougar and kille dit with his 4 inch folding pocket knife?

This was within the last year or two I believe.

Anyway, just shooting the gun should scare the lion away.

I think the 9mm would be fine.

For self defense I would prefer the 9mm to the mountain lion, easier to control and much easier to conceal.

I vote "no"

unless it was one's only choice. Even a .22 is better than nothing, but neither are prudent choices, IMHO. Use enough gun...

Socrates, I think certain meanings are lost in translation. It might "all be Greek to me", but █████ cat and pu$$y are not the same thing. Please forgive my vulgarity.

I don't know how a 9mm would do, but I think I'd worry more about being attacked by aliens from another planet than being attacked by a mountain lion.

I read about a LOT more alien attacks back before "The World Weekly News" went out of business.

Faced with a "in your face life or death right now" conflict with a cat, a 9mm is better than nothing. Heck, a stick is better than nothing.

I carry a .45 while bowhunting as lion defense. I know 2 people that have been stalked while bowhunting and had to kill the cat with an arrow. Now it is legal for bowhunters to carry a sidearm.

All that aside, I realize the first time I might know I am on the menu is when Big Tom hits me from behind. After that it is all about how bad you want to live. Maybe a myth, but I have been told they are very protective of thier eyes.

Mountain Lions will normally retreat if you act aggressively toward them. In the case where they don't, pepper spray/mace or even something as small as a pellet rifle will make them run.

Animals are not like humans, especially felines. If they get an ever-so-slightly amount of pain from an unsuspected source, they will retreat just because it startles them.

But, I carry my 1911 .45 when I am in the high country here. Good enough for most of the critters around Colorado, except maybe a large Bull Elk, which we do get on occassion. And, I wouldn't shoot unless it charged me, which is probably the case of most people here, I would hope.

I would have no problem shooting an animal that charges me. I just hope I'll never have to come to that, because I don't want to kill anyone, or any animal. And I don't carry mace so my firearm is the only protection..

Can a 9mm take this guy... it doesn't have to be in one shot.
It may, it may not. This is no different than with a person. Of course most mountain lions like to pounce on you from behind so you will not have much time to do anything before it sinks its teeth into your neck.

Would I use a 9mm if I had it, sure.

Would I like to have more than a 9mm, certainly.

Would I prefer to be with another person who is also armed to get the thing off me... DAMN STAIGHT!!!
