I found Jesus and He said, "Tag! You're it!"

but seriously,

"As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression.
In both instances there is a twilight when everything remains
seemingly unchanged. And it is in such twilight that we all
must be most aware of change in the air - however slight -
lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness."

Tamara, your sentiment is correct, but I THINK your general is wrong. IIRC, it was Nathan B. Forrest, a lesser luminary in the Confederate general ranks.

Appropriate for the season:

"The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can't get and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time is made good by looting A to satisfy B. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is sort of an advance auction sale of stolen goods." [H. L. Mencken]

"If you are robbing Peter to pay Paul, you can always count on the support of Paul." [I think this is also Mencken. In any case, it is a summary of the above.]

Dunno where it started, but it was a popular tagline:

"Bother!", said Pooh, as he chambered another round...

From my grandfather, after I helped him sneak his new brown-bagged bottle of JD past my grandmother, "Discretion is the better part of valor" Wonder who first uttered it?

"Beauty is only a light switch away", and "Go ugly, early!" - from my crew dawg travels

I have two books on my nightstand (actually, three, but my Caspian Officer's ACP is stashed inside the third), one is Sun Tzu's Art of War, and the other is The Wit and Wisdom of Mark Twain. Tons of quotes abound from Mr. Twain, but this one has been my recent favorite:

"I have achieved my seventy years in the usual way: by sticking strictly to a scheme of life which would kill anybody else."

I'm only halfway to his 70 years, but it's admirable...

"If we want to regain the respect of the world, we should begin by announcing that children have no business expressing opinions on anything except 'Do you have enough room in the toes?' " -Florence King

"The best way to keep women from having to abort rape-conceived babies is to increase the punishment for rape by placing much of it in the hands of women themselves.
All women should be allowed to own a gun simply by virtue of being female. A woman who prefers to conceal her gun in her handbag should be given a carry permit with no questions asked. A woman who is willing to wear her gun in a holster on the outermost layer of her clothing should be allowed to do so without having to bother with permits of any kind. In all cases it should be understood that an armed woman not only has a right to defend herself, but a responsibility to come to the aid of other women as well. The feminists want sisterhood? Sister, you've got it." -Florence King

From my old range master:

If they're good enough to shoot once they're good nuf to shoot again.

Two to the chest and one to the head will make any man forget his evil intentions.

From my Dad:
Son your aligator mouth is about to overload your mocking bird a**. (last time I ever bowed up towards him.)

Old partner:
Your mouth is either your best asset or your worst detriment.

And finally from a training captain.

Make no mistake about it that you go we go sh** only goes on in "Backdraft".

There's alot more I've heard but those seem to cover just about everything.

Best wishes Best luck Poacher.

Elvis is dead...and I don't feel so good myself. - Lewis Grizzard

When I was 16, I was convinced my father was the stupidest man on earth. When I was 26, I was amazed at how much the old man had learned in just ten years. - Mark Twain

No matter how bad the battle gets, there's always some guy on the other side who still has enough of a sense of humor to shoot you in the ass if you stick it up. - My former Drill Sergeant, 1972

Fate has denied us victory, but deemed us glorious immortality. - Robert E. Lee
