From this to this
I started with a Turk mauser I got at at gun show for a grand total of $69. I experimented alot with this gun and it was a real learning experience and I had alot of fun. Let's see, all the work I did...
Cut the barrel and cut a crown Replaced stock Timney trigger Drilled and tapped reciever stripped and reblued added commercial bolt cheap tasco 3-9x40 I kept it in 8x57 and other than the drill and tap and the safety I did all the work. It holds just over an inch and with new optics and handloads, I'll get it under and inch. With the synthetic stock it kicks like a mule. What do you guys think? I've put just over $300 in it. |

Very nice indeed. I think the only thing I would do is add a better scope later on when you can buy one or want to but the tasco will do you for a while

Firstfreedom, I bought it off ebay and there are no markings of a maker. I think it's an ATI. The only thing on the stock is engraved with a dremel "98". I'm also planning on getting a boyd's for it. Better glass will be the next step.

+1 from me. That's a nice looking rifle, and sounds like a nice shooter. I think your efforts were well worth it.

Great job! I did one too. Found a wood target stock at a garage sale for $8, and talked them down to $6. Also, had a brand new Tasco (6x24x) that I'd bought on closeout. so I've got about $200 in mine. 1 1/2" groups with commercial ammo, working on tuning and handloads. 8X57 is a great (underated) round. If you handload, there's now a much better selection of bullets available, than there used to be.

Nice job. I had a sporterized 98 in 8X57 for years. It would shoot right at 1 to 1-1/2" at 100 yds. I loaded 4350 with a Sierra 200 gr Gameking. It put elk down hard. You will love the performance on game.
