If I told ya, I'd have to kill ya.

No, really...I would have to change where I kept it, though. I'll just say, it's within reach.

carry guns loaded in a small safe, 1911 home defense gun in lock box (simplex lock, easy open in the dark) on the head board locked and loaded. Used to be in a drawer, but kids around now...

I specifically keep all guns in the safe, unloaded, in their containers. Ammo is kept in a separate safe. We have small children that visit our home often and are quite inquisitive. In order for an incident to take place someone would have to defeat two safes, match up ammo to magazine and then match magazine to handgun.

Our neighborhood is quite safe and quiet. If I had need of a loaded gun, we would be moving to another place - pronto. Two weeks ago we had some junior high school age skate-boarders come thorough looking for good places to skate. While I was talking to them, three squad cars pulled up, packed them in and took off. Haven't seen them since.

One of the neighbors was "fearful" that it was a "street gang" so she called the cops. Protect and serve at its finest.

Michael.

In my nightstand with drawer open.

Ky Rifle: Tam can't roll over with a 96 in bed with her!

Gun Vault bolted to the back of the nightstand, chambered round.

1.3 kids in the house so need to be careful.

Guess that would be "other".

MLH...

Exactly what I was thinking!
A 96 would make a big lump to have to roll over! Maybe she's got twin beds. One for her, and the other for a few well placed firearms. (under a nice home-made quilt, of course.)

Sorry for the anti-revolver bias - I just recently shot 'Old Sourdough's tuned revolver and MAN that thing was nice.

I live in a very nice neighborhood, and currently do not feel the need to keep the gun loaded or even to keep magazines loaded. My stuff is kept in a lug-bolted safe hidden where I can get to it pretty quickly. If something happened, it would be 5 minutes before I was ready.

The closest thing to gang activity in Palo Alto are the squirrels - this time of year, they are getting CRAZY. My attitude about nighttime storage may change as I get more familiar with my weapons and/or if things ever changed in the neighborhood.

Now, EAST Palo Alto - THAT's a different story. If I lived there, I would keep the holster attached to my body! It's ironic - Palo Alto is one of the 50 wealthiest communities in the US, and directly across highway 101 is one of the highest crime areas in the US, EAST Palo Alto.

I _DO_ keep a 6-D cell Maglite next to my bed. So don't mess with me. I might BLIND you!

Four gunnie personality types answer this question:
  • I keep my gun below the foot of my bed, and I use a home made trigger switch that is securely attached between the trigger and the bedroom doorknob. If anyone touches that knob, they're dead. (Mall-Ninja)
  • On the floor, under the dirty clothes I stripped off when I got home from work. (Redneck)
  • Gun? What gun? I don't own any guns! If I did and I told you about it, I'd have to sell them. (PGP-encodeded)
  • Unloaded and locked in a safe with a trigger lock applied. Magazines kept locked in a separate safe (unloaded) and ammunition stored securely locked up down at the local gun store. (Married)

On a rope, dangling from a ceiling fan. When BG enters my bedroom, I'll hit the switch and duck my head. The whirling gun will knock him senseless.

I voted other, since it's not really in a safe.

It's a .40 cal pistol is locked in a pistol box that bolted to the floor next to the bed. Loaded mag, round in chamber, condition 2.

To back it up is a 12 gauge in the safe about 10 feet away, loaded mag, chamber empty, slide and safety locked. There's also a 9mm carbine and a 9mm pistol in there with loaded mags and empty chambers.

No kids so the safe is unlocked unless I'm not home or neices and nephews are about.

I voted under pillow but our headboard has a drop down door on each side. My side, Beretta 9sFS, condition 2. Her side, Colt 22, condition 3.
When the grandkids visit, both go up on entertainment center on the wall oposite the foot of the bed.
We have a, please don't flame me for this , "tactial .410 shotgun in the MB closet. It has a mini mag lite attached to the barrel. Single shot, it is stored unloaded, with 4 rounds near by.
There is another 92fs hidden in the kitchen, condition 2.

Top of the wish list is a Mossberg Predator 8-shot 12-gauge as home defense weapon.

I keep my Walther P99 .40 cal with attached TacLite locked and loaded along with 2 full magazines in my quick open safe inside my nightstand.

I've checked, and out of a sound sleep I can have it in hand in about 10 seconds.

My pistol is always in my hands when I sleep. If I'm sleeping on my back then I sleep in the modern isosceles, on my side I use modified weaver, and on my stomach simple prone position. .
I really use a gunvault.

How do you store your handgun at night?

I give mine the keys to the car so it can run around doing drive-bys.

Primary handgun...

Caspian Officer's ACP - top drawer, nightstand.

Remington 870 Police - between nightstand and headboard.

Bulgarian SLR-95 AK - between bookcase and dresser near foot of bed.

That about covers it.

(Had a couple attempted home invasions in Citrus Heights, CA a few years ago. Never relaxed from that readiness posture. )

I sleep with a gun under my pillow.
It's usually my SA vaquero .45 colt, so I'm still fairly safe.
However, it's on the way to Gary Reeder, so last night I tried my SIG 2340.
The mag catch came undone, so it's no longer a pillow gun.
My CZ is at another gunshop, so I'll have to use my usp compact .45, or my bisley-vaquero in .44
