S&W DAO conversions, KFrame
This is something I know absolutely nothing about. I've always shot my K frames DA. Due to a hand injury I can't make it work with the Smiths I have. I'm thinking of a 2 ' to 4" with a bobbed hammer and a lightened DAO trigger. A Model 10 or equivelent would be ideal. Any information or smith recomendations would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Essex

"I've always shot my K frames DA."
Do you mean SA? Or do you just want a lighter DA pull? Lightening the DA on an S&W is easy, and almost any gunsmith can do the job. There would be no advantage to bobbing the hammer, though you can do so if you want. S&W revolvers are DA or SA, the choice being up to the user from shot to shot; DAO only means not cocking the hammer manually. You could have the single action notch removed from the hammer, but I see no point in that since you just won't use it. Jim |

My recommendation for S&W trigger work to lighten the trigger as much as possible, is the S&W Performance Center.
NO ONE knows more about it than S&W, and they will have no problems giving you the absolutely lightest trigger possible consistent with reliable ignition. Apparently S&W gets a fair number of requests for light DA triggers due to hand injuries. Their quality of work, prices, and turnaround are all excellent, and you have no worries about whether the gunsmith really knows what he's doing. |

Brownells used to sell a competition hammer for the K frames. It was DAO and reduced the trigger pull to about 7 lbs. It's been awhile since I've bought a new catalog so you might want to ask them about it. Mention that it had a small wheel that ran along the top of the mainspring.

I talked to the S&W performance center last week and was told that stock DA pulls range up to 16 pounds and it could only be lightened a pound or two, not enough to make much of a diffrence. And yep, I don't use the single action feature at all..........Essex

essexcounty: Any good gunsmith can reduce it below 10 lbs and still have a reliable gun. The performance center may not want to for liability reasons, but Karl Sokol will be glad to do it for you.

Contact Cylinder and Slide. They can set you up. It won't be cheap, though.

If you can find one like this laying around, its a 65-5 K Frame .357mag, buy it and send it off to have done what you want. According to the original owner the S&W Performance Center shop set it up for DAO and lightened the trigger pull just a couple of pounds but they mad the action as smooth as oiled glass. Makes it feel like a 5lb. pull. You might want to talk to Gemini Customs. They specialize in Ruger SP-101's but also work on Smiths.
