Lead poisoning and firing range
There is a trap/skeet club by me that I go to probably 2-3 times a week. The thing that gets me is that place has to be an ecological disaster. A lot of houses nearby get their water from wells and lead in minute amounts can be very damaging.
http://www.purdue.edu/dp/envirosoft/...v/src/lead.htm Anyone shoot trap with lead free shot? Is it available? How do other areas handle the problem? Seems like most people just ignore it. |

From what i've read lead is more dangerous inhaled than through the drinking water. There's another thread on here that talks about the dangers of lead poisoning at the range. I don't think lead will filter down into the ground water.

The NRA can give you information on lead poisoning. There are some ranges ,mostly new ones that require lead free shot so yes it is available. There are simple tests to determine if you have lead poisoning and treatment to remove it.

Metallic lead is not really a very significant source of biological lead.
It takes pretty extreme circumstances to turn metallic lead into an organic compound. Lead shot mostly sits on the ground. Any lead leaching off tends to stay in the upper layers of soil since it easily binds with the soil. Lead bullets are only removed from shooting victims if they are encountered during surgery or there movement in the body could lead to other problems. Shooting victims with lead in them do not suffer from lead poisoning. |

Lead comes from the earth.
I dont see how putting it back there is going to make any difference. |

Wont do anything, only when it's ingested on the micro scale-macro has too little surface area to be absorbed -plus lead on the surface turns to lead oxide waaaay before it reaches water tables. Good for for being so ecologically friendly. Anyway, eating a bullet would be no where near as bad as inhaling or somehow ingesting small powder/dust-this can be much more easily be absorbed!
