Believe it or not, bird shot does not penetrate enough. Stick with 00 buck.

It would be devistating inside of 10-15 feet, past that it spreads it's small pellets too far apart to help insure any pentration. The biggest bird shot I would feel comfortable with is #4 bird shot, even then heavy clothing would restrict some of the penetration, but I would use it inside of 30feet and feel comfortable. I have used the same #4 to kill fox out to 45 yards with the pellets penetrationg to 4" through meat and a few pellets pentrated into the skull. Better yet would be #2's or BB's for self defense.

It would be perfect for self defense against angry doves.

Stick to buckshot unless ranges are real close and over penetration is a real problem. And, of course, pattern your gun with it so you know exactly what it will do ...

For self defense nothing beats "cubic shot", not even 00 buck.

Do you really want a fast opening pattern for self defense?

"12 GAUGE CUBIC SHOT
THESE SHELLS CONTAIN PELLETS EXTRUDED AND CUT INTO SMALL UNIFORM CUBES, RESULTING IN A FAST OPENING LETHAL PATTERN, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME REDUCING THE POSSIBILITY OF RICOCHETS. THESE SHELLS ARE PARTICULARLY EFFECTIVE IN HEAVY COVER ON GAME TARGETS SUCH AS GROUSE, SWAMP RATS, ETC." - http://www.hi-vel.com/Catalog__17/Sp..._ammuniti.html

Why, so some of the load misses the target?

Or hits the target when your wife misses, or you get surprised and barely miss.

Do your research and make your decision based on data; terminal ballistics, proven performance. Personally, I would stay away from exotic shotshells. Other than slugs, there is a reason buckshot is mentioned more often than any other SD / HD / CD/ TEOTWAWKI load. Proven performance, effective measured terminal performance. When you hear advice to pattern the load with "your" shotgun yourself, they are not just blowing smoke up your pant leg. Each shotgun's bore parameters vary slightly so you need to find which load your shotgun patterns best, after you decide on a gauge. Some reading.
