Whats the most powerful non .50 round out there?

Is the .416 Rigby the most powerful round under fifty caliber out there? It seems like a rather enormous cartridge... And I've never heard of a bigger one.

You mean like .458 WinMag or .458 Lott?

I think there are some .475 wildcats, too.

Oooh... 458 Lott is gigantic...

It'd be fun to own one of these mega-guns.

460 Wby. Mag. (500 at 2650). Recoil is around 99 ft lbs on a 10.5 lb rifle.

What about .577 T-rex or a 4 bore. They are technically above a 50 cal as far as diameter. Not sure if that is what you meant?

Gunmoney, I was asking about calibers below .50, but you bring up an excellent point...

In CommieFornia, they banned .50 Cal rifles. I wonder how that law is worded...

Could a Californian own a .577 T-Rex??

I THINK the California ban is specifically directed at the .50 BMG, so your .500 Nitro Express is safe so far. There are already some .50 caliber rounds of the same ballistics as but not interchangeable with .50 BMG coming along to spit in the eyes of the California tyrants. The bill in New York is more general and will apparently ban everything, even a shotgun for which a rifled slug barrel is available.

.700 nitor is the biggest caliber you can commerically buy. Its at the limit of recoil for most folks.

As the old story goes, the novice said to the old timer: "why do you use a .700 for cape buffalo" He replied: " Well sonny, they dont make a .800"

I always thought a 50 BMG case necked down to .458 would be a nice round tohave in Kali. Just think: With 500 grain solids, you could probably get 3000+ FPS and actually penetrate a fuel tanker car on a train... and it would be legal to own in CA.

Not that I advocate this kind of behavior, but I think the legislature in the Golden State are a little silly.

Does anyone know where a person could get a Thompson Encore barrel in 338 Lapua Magnum. The 338 is just a necked down 416 Rigby case and you can get barrels in that caliber almost everywhere. Though they DO make spitzer bullet for the 416 Rigby . Though I better have one h*ll of a muzzle break.

Ross Seyfried designed a round he called the .585 Nyatti.

10,000 foot pounds of energy out of a bolt-action rifle.

+2 on .460 Weatherby. From what I understand, it's not much fun to shoot.

I've fired a .460. No, it's not all that pleasant to shoot, but I've fired a lot of other guns that were even worse.

Between 4400 and 4700 foot-pounds. Between a .338 Win Mag and a .458 Win Mag.
About equivalent to a .375 H&H in energy, but flatter shooting..

Man, I thought I was doing well with my 45-70 but dang!!!!

I figure that for the money, the highest caliber that I will need (if I go hunting elephants and such) is the 45-70. They are cheap and fun to fire.

I'd like to have the .50 just for grins though .
