Black Powder Shells for Damascus Barrels

I've an old Parker Under-lever 10-gauge that has the damascus steel barrels. I've been told that it is unsafe to shoot modern smokeless shotshells in them, but that it is okay to shoot black powder shells for which it was designed. Anyone have any experience with this quandry?
