Do you CCW into friend/relative's house?

Judging from the faces that they make when they find out that I'm a "gun person," most of my friends and relatives are anti's. That's fine, I don't tell them how to live just like I don't like them telling me.

However, I am somewhat conflicted over whether or not to bring my CCW piece into their homes. Usually, I just leave it in the car. Their home, their castle, so I try to abide by what I believe their wishes would be even though most dont know that I'm carrying.

But dont many of the "just in case" lines of reasoning still apply? Or maybe even more so, since my piece would probably be the only piece in the house? Dunno.

What do you guys do?

I carry whenever I visit friends; however, most of my friends either carry or are otherwise firearms enthusiasts. The ones who aren't say that they don't mind if I carry whenever I visit.

You're lucky to have this problem...most of us gun nuts are lonesome introverted drifters so it really isn't an issue.....

I carry everywhere it is not prohibited by law. The vast majority of my friends have no clue I am armed in their presence, even though they know I'm a gun nut and carry all the time. Some even ask me how come I didn't bring my gun. I love the expressions when I inform them I did.

In South Carolina, this is specifically addressed in the CWP statute -- homes are treated differently than businesses. You have to ask specific permission to carry into a home.

When I visit friends/relatives for a for a few minutes to a couple of hours, I don't bother telling them that I'm carrying. They know I do but it's sort of a don't ask/don't tell thing. However, If I'm going to be spending the night I will tell them I'm carrying and ask them where they would like me to put my handgun for the night.

I do like KPS for the most part. When I travel and visit friends, say over to the next state for a couple of days, I usually bring a gun run or lockable box (pelican case). I inform the owner and offer to put things in the car if my gun is an issue. It never has been. They understand about protection and traveling. They also know I carry in my home state and am licensed.

In my home state, I generally carry everywhere that is legal, but may opt not to carry in the home of someone that I know has an issue with guns. Contrary to above, I have friends who don't appreciate guns, though most are cool about it (they just don't want to own one), but a few have strong feelings or are genuinely and unnaturally scared of guns. I respect their wishes and so far the issue has gone totally unmentioned and nobody is bothered.

On the other hand, I have many CCW friends who not only carry and are okay with guests carrying, but who might ask what I was packing and ask my gun to be cleared so they can look at it.

No knowledge, no harm......

I carry everywhere that it is legal and must confess a few places where it is not. (you've heard my maxim before but it bears repeating: "The places where firearms are prohibited by law are the very places where they're needed most.")

My family, friends, and associates are not responsible for my personal safety.....I AM. I go very few places without my wife and I am absolutely responsible for her well-being.

A life-threatening situation can happen anywhere, anytime. Wouldn't it be comforting to know that someone in your presence is armed and competent?

To me, this goes to the heart of the Second Amendment's purpose: We are that well-regulated militia, each of us. It is our very sober responsibility to be about our constitutional business.

Your comments are always welcome.

In UT the law reads "you can carry anywhere that isnt posted in writing or stated verbally" this includes homes and business's.
Of course the usual Govt. facilities apply........
If I am not told...dont carry here....I carry everywhere. Most of my close friends and family know...but it never comes up.
Shoot well

I carry it everywhere... I have one friend who's wife doesn't like it... and asked me not to carry...

then one day in the grocery store, she asked why I never come over anymore... so I told her... that even though they have a nice home in a decent neighborhood, that I didn't feel safe without protection...

she now allows carry in her house... (they also had 2 break ins in the last 6 monthes...)

if my gun ain't welcome, neiother am I...

I carry. I also keep it concealed and don't bring up the issue for conversation.

I think you're actually putting them at more risk by leaving it in the car. A holstered gun is a safe gun. Bad things tend to happen when you're drawing and holstering. And people do break into cars and steal things.

Unless they are willing and able to protect my wife and I, then I have to carry.

Around here, leaving it in the car is likely to make people ask, "WHere's your sidearm?"

Seriously, I've carried into folks' houses. If any of them spotted it, they said nothing.

Yes, I do.

I'm always armed. I just don't go about flashing my "pistol of the day" to anyone. We have some friends who have never been touched by violence, thus they have no guns in their house and don't know how to use guns. We're all in our 50's and I hope they keep being lucky. When we go to their house, I usually have a P-32 strapped to my leg and a larger caliber pistol in my pocket. To quote "Geraldo" (man! I thought I'd NEVER be doing that!), "If I go down, it's going to be in a gunfight, not begging some guy not to hurt me".

The key here is Concealed.

I do not discuss, show or carry in a way that requires explanation unless I am with other firearms owners or LEOs

I do.

This brings up another question. One I've struggled with since carrying.

Who do you allow to know you are carrying? Why?

I've decided that the less people that know, the better off I am. The thing that concerns me is that in a bad situation a person who knows that I carry may get me/my family/bystanders/etc. into even hotter water.

The thing I worry about is being in a situation where the BG has the drop and someone who knows I carry says something stupid like "oh yeah, well he has a gun too!" Or having one of my children say "don't hurt me or my dad will shoot you!". I've spoken to my wife about it and she understands the situation. My kids are young enough that I don't need to worry too much about it now.

The flip side of this is that you would want others around you to know what to do if worse came to worst and you had to take some kind of action with your firearm.

Ideas?????

I literaly do not have any friends who are not at least casual shooters (by which I mean, "Hey, let's head on out to the property, cook some weenies over the campfire and ventilate a few tin cans!!")

A few people in my immedate profession know that I have a pistol permit, but for the most part only my shooting friends know when I'm carrying. Many of them carry as well, so it pays to work some tactics out in advance...

"Don't ask, don't tell," as mentioned - it is supposed to be concealed, after all.

I am lucky in that those whom I associate with are all those who do as well.

All of my friends and family are Ok with me CCWing into their homes etc. (Most of my friends are some form of Leo)

I do show common courtesy and keep it concealed or if I take it off, it goes into a safe place unchambered.

I carry to houses of family and friends. All my friends are gun owners. I never have a problem as most everyone else is carrying.
