Memorial Day

The bugle echoes shrill and sweet,
But not of war it sings today.
The road is rhythmic with the feet
Of men-at-arms who come to pray.

The rose blossoms white and red
On tombs where weary soldiers lie;
Flags wave above the honored dead
And martial music cleaves the sky.

Above their wreath-strewn graves we kneel,
They kept the faith and fought the fight.
Through flying lead and crimson steel
They plunged for Freedom and the Right.

May we, their grateful children, learn
Their strength, who lie beneath this sod,
Who went through fire and death to earn
At last the accolade of God.
In shining rank on rank arrayed,
They march, the legions of the Lord;
He is their Captain unafraid,
The Prince of Peace. . . who brought a sword.

Poem by SGT Joyce Kilmer, USA (KIA 30 July 1918)

Nah T-Z.

Read it within minutes of its posting. Now that it's Memorial Day, a prayer for all those who paid with the ultimate sacrifice, a prayer for all those injured and a prayer for their loved ones. Thank you for fighting back the Nazis and the Japanese in WW II. Thank you for fighting the British in 1776 and 1812. Thank you for beating the Kaiser. Thank you for throwing back the commies in Korea. Thank you fighting for freedom in Vietnam. Thank you for whupping Sadam and liberating Kuwait. Thank you for liberating Afghanistan from the Taliban. Thank you for standing those lonely vigils far from home and loved ones so that we may enjoy the blessings of liberty.

If I've missed any conflict, my apologies.

There's always the other thread in legal/political.

4v50gary,
You didn't have to itemize 'em. You got your message across loud and clear. And it's appreciated.

Deadman,

Thanks very much. Many Americans forget that you folks have been in most of the shooting wars we've been in during the last century. The Kiwis, too. You could have knocked me over with a feather when I discovered your arty down at Vung Tau.

Your vets deserve just as much recognition as ours.

MEMORIAL DAY: In my opinion, the most important, sacred day of the year . . . A time when everyone should be grateful to the real heroes, those who did not return to this wonderful country and our wonderful life. May God bless each of them and those who still grieve.
