All rights reserved Global News Wire - Asia Africa Intelligence Wire Copyright 2002 The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad Malay Mail July 8, 2002 LENGTH: 312 words HEADLINE: NO NEED FOR WEAPONS' BYLINE: Muzli Mohd Zin BODY: NO need to carry weapons and learn martial arts, just exercise more PR (public relations) skills instead. That is the advice to all enforcement officers when carrying out their duties, and it comes from Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister, Datuk M. Kayveas, who felt the majority of enforcement exercises conducted by officers are provocative in nature. He said the aggressive approach by some officers would lead to retaliation from "the other party". "Enforcement officers must have the proper approach in dealing with the public and the attitude (of being provocative and aggressive) must change," said Kayveas yesterday. He said it was important that enforcement officers be equipped with human relations and interpersonal skills. He added that local councils should start conducting seminars and training programmes on public relations skills for their officers. Kayveas was responding to a query by The Malay Mail whether enforcement officers with the various local councils should be armed. He said a detailed study should be conducted before bringing it to the Cabinet. "The fewer weapons used, the better," said Kayveas, adding that there were no guarantees that the weapons would not be abused or misused if implemented. "And if there is a need to equip the officers, it should be in the form of less harmful weapons, like stun guns." The issue of equipping enforcement officers with firearms has become a matter of national interest following the Road Transport Department"s statement on the matter. This came after the attack on three RTD officers along the Karak Highway last Wednesday night by several men armed with parangs and iron rods, following a chase along the highway. Yesterday, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik, was reported as saying that the Cabinet would discuss the matter at its meeting this Wednesday.

On my trip to KL, Malaysia a couple months ago, I was more concerned about the police than anybody else...since I'm an Asian American not of native Malay descent (considered a sellout).
