Man dies in gun accident
By MARK THOMPSON
Star-Telegram Staff Writer
A Denton man fatally shot himself while fishing with two friends on Lewisville Lake on Sunday, after reportedly misjudging how many rounds were left in a pistol, officials said.

Sergio A. Moreno, 36, discharged several rounds from a .22-caliber handgun into the water, then pointed the gun toward his nose and pulled the trigger again, according to statements from two men fishing with him in a small boat, said Kevin Patton, a spokesman for the Denton County Sheriff's Department.

"It looks like it's an accidental death," Patton said. That's based on statements given by Moreno's fishing companions that he "lost count of the rounds when he was firing the gun."

Moreno was found dead at the scene by Denton Fire Department personnel about 5:40 p.m.

The shooting occurred about 10 minutes earlier 50 to 75 yards off Lakeshore Road near Vacation Village mobile home park, Patton said.

Moreno was married and has at least one child, Patton said.

Moreno's friends said the three men were drinking earlier Sunday, but they did not take alcohol with them on the boat, Patton said.

I have, probably three or four times in my life, combined guns and alcohol. The bad news is, it really was kind of fun. The good news is, I haven't done it for at least 8 years just because stupid stuff like that is a whole lot more likely to happen. So I'm in no position to condemn the guy to his genetic dead-end, but I hope it reminds us all not to mix the two.

There's a Jeff Foxworthy line that comes to mind: "You may be a redneck, if you've ever gotten too drunk to fish." This guy fits the description, as in, the redneck's last words. "Hey, y'all, watch this!".

Condolences to his family.

Evolution of the species came to a screeching halt when product liability laws were established. No more thinning of the species to the extent necessary. Too bad.

To tell you the truth, I kind of lost track myself, in all the excitement...but bein' as this is a .22, the most powerful handgun in the world and can blow your pink....cleaaaan off...I can ask myself a question...do I feel lucky? Well, do I....punk?

Skunkabilly... Clint? Clint, is that you?

Mute... you'd like Herschel Davis' tag line for his training range called "The Site" ( www.shoot-at-the-site.com ) ... on the T-shirt and his Truck it says:

"Thin the herd..."
