A special day for New Jersey's sporting community
Copyright 2002 Bergen Record Corporation
The Record (Bergen County, NJ) September 6, 2002 Friday All Editions SECTION: SPORTS; OUTDOORS; Pg. S02 LENGTH: 952 words HEADLINE: Go fish . . . and hunt, too!; A special day for New Jersey's sporting community SOURCE: North Jersey Media Group BYLINE: OLIVER SHAPIRO BODY: It's still a few weeks away, but put it on your calendar now. New Jersey will have a number of terrific activities that celebrate the annual observance of National Hunting and Fishing Day, Sept. 28. NHFD began decades ago in the mind of a Pennsylvania sports shop owner, and his state adopted the concept in 1970. Word quickly got out, and the concept reached the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives in 1971. The measure was unanimously passed in 1972. "I urge all citizens to join with outdoor sportsmen in the wise use of our natural resources and in ensuring their proper management for the benefit of future generations," said then-President Richard Nixon upon signing the item into law. The event is designed to recognize and commend the sporting community for its leadership and ongoing commitment to conserving our state's and country's fish and wildlife resources. "To commemorate National Hunting and Fishing Day in New Jersey, the Division of Fish and Wildlife will sponsor a Wildlife Heritage Festival at the Pequest Trout Hatchery and Natural Resource Education Center in Warren County," said N.J. Division of Fish and Wildlife director Bob McDowell. "The day's activities are designed to get individuals and families outdoors and acquaint them with the area's unique natural resources." The event will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, rain or shine. Highlights include a variety of exhibits and events planned to showcase ways that people interact with wildlife from an historical and modern point of view. Visitors can learn about primitive and modern shooting sports as well as early fishing techniques. Children can enjoy spin casting in the education pond and target shooting on the grounds. Various conservation groups and wildlife artisans will be on hand and demonstrations will focus on black bear research, trout spawning, aquatic insects, pheasants, leather working, cooking wild game and fish, and much more. Food and live music will be available. Other available activities and exhibits will include grape-tasting, historical reenactments, primitive fishing, plant sales, flintlock demos, bluebird houses, wool and flax spinning demos, soap-making, and quillwork. Admission is free, and the hatchery is located on Route 46 in Oxford, west of Hackettstown. For more information call (908) 637-4125. The Division also will be cooperating with the Union County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs, the Union County Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Cranford Rod and Gun Club to present a free Introduction to Shooting Sports Program from noon to 4 p.m. that day. It will be held at the Union County Trap and Skeet Range on Kenilworth Boulevard in Cranford, off Exit 138 of the Garden State Parkway. "This event is an ideal opportunity to learn the basics of safe shotgun shooting with trained Division coaches experienced in teaching completely new shooters," said McDowell. "Our goal here is to introduce newcomers to the sport in a non-threatening, fun, and safe atmosphere." These coaches will help participants gain instruction in firearms safety, and assist them with a five-shot activated clay target shoot. Air rifle and archery ranges also will be available for use by youngsters. Participants should be at least 10 years of age for the shotgun activities, and those under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Although attendees are free to bring their own shotguns, some will be made available by those running the activities. Shells and targets also are provided by the sponsors. Anyone bringing a firearm is required to keep it cased and unloaded until it's brought to the firing line. Anyone who wishes to celebrate NHFD in other venues can take advantage of any of the myriad of outdoors activities available to New Jersey citizens, be it freshwater or saltwater fishing, goose hunting, bowhunting for deer (within certain areas only), or shooting. Sportsmen are especially encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to introduce newcomers to any of these pastimes as well.

Thanks so much for posting that! Sounds like just the opportunity I've been looking for to get started in trap.

National Hunting and Fishing Day?
First time I've heard of it. Is there gonna be some flyer in the mail? How about a NHFD sale at Sears? 10% off at Wal-Mart?
