The Rock Island 1911A1 can be had between $350.00 to $375.00 at most gunshops. They are quite reliable, very durable and will eat just about any load you feed them!
Can't say much about S&W because I don't care for them. On the other hand you won't be dissapointed in Ruger products. |

Don't overlook the used gun case. There may be some real gems in your price range laying around.

I prefer used. I can't stay out from under the hood. IOWs, I change, replace, modify or hang stuff off of most of my purchases. In a 22, I really like the reliability of Browning Buckmarks. Search those used displays also. I recently ran up on a S&W M48 dual cylinder 22/22 Magnum 6" revolver that is a pinned and recessed wonder. I have scored a M28-2 and M19-4 357 Magnums fom S&W used this week. IF you spot a Colt M1991A1 45 ACP for $400.00, BUY IT!

The Ruger MKII (If you can still find it on the shelves, it just evolved into the MKIII) is one of my favorite shooters. It is a great all around handgun for learning, and it's in your price range.
The used rack will possibly yeild a good result. You didn't state your age or what you are interested in, so it's really kind of speculative, but you also have enough cash to pick up the latest AK type semi auto rifle similar to the SAR1, if the store carries them.

Another vote for the "used gun" case.tom.

Recommend you look at a Browning Buckmark as well, if they have those - nice fun .22 plinker/target pistol.

"Something fun"... boy, that takes in a lot of territory!
Definitely look at the used gun case and see what gems are to be found. Other posters have offered good advice -- Rock Island 1911's and if you find a Colt 1991A1 it's definitely worth $400. Or you could find yourself a nice, handy .38 or .357 for between $300 and $350 and use the rest for ammo. For around $400 look at the G-22 rifle. It's a snazzy .22 bullpup rifle (a bit expensive for a .22 IMHO) that looks like a futuristic battle rifle. See attached photo. Why not look for a Ruger Vaquero in .45, .44 or even .32 H&R Mag? (Now there is a fun but pricey little cartridge).

I like the weird looking 22 rifle, i havent figuerd out how to do a quote on here but the feller wanting to know my age i am 25 and i like older stuff, that 1911 copy is looking good to me, also i already have an AK, and i love it. Also i am liking the idea of the 22 plinker idea, i would like to have one in an double action revolver though.

On a good day $400 and change will get you a 1911, the Springfield GI45. Wait until after Christmas and go for it.

Another vote for the Springer, although if you're set on a .22, you cannot go wrong with the Buckmark.
Take a look at Ruger's SP-101 in .22 for a double-action revolver.

Can I assume from your name that you like C&R pistols? A good gun shop will let you look through catalogs of military surplus guns that are available. You could come out with 2 Makarovs, or a Mak and a Star. I wish I had your problem! Have fun

Tokarev, . . . just my 2 cents worth: assuming you are a young person and have not been shooting for a couple decades, . . .
The first gun I would look at if I were you is the previously mentioned Browning Buckmark, .22. It can be had with a slab sided barrel, a round bull barrel, or a round bull barrel up to about 14 inches long. I prefer the small 4 inch slab side. You will find if you compare the two very carefully, that the Browning is made a bit better than the Ruger, and the trigger is two or three steps above any of the Ruger .22's. It is also usually comparably priced and sometimes is cheaper than the Ruger: it should sell for the $250.00 range, leaving you bunches of cash for ammo, holster, ammo, cleaning kit, ammo, custom grips, ammo, . . . If a .22 doesn't hit your fancy, . . . my first suggestion has also been mentioned earlier: the Springfield Armory GI, you can get for $375.00 or so. That is brand new in the box, . . . carries a life time warranty. I have no personal experience with Rock Island, but over on 1911.com, . . . there seem to be more negative comments on them than the SA. By the way, . . . yes I have both the Browning and the SA, . . . love em both. May God bless, Dwight
