How To: the poor man's recoil pad

FYI, this was made up on the spot at the range, totally improvised.

Take some socks or something like that (I used a woolen beanie) and fold them up and place them inside one of those 25-count packs of 12g shells like you can buy at Wally's World. Wrap duct tape around the box so it can't come open at all. Crush the middle of the big side of the box so it's kind of folded like a hotdog bun and place the fold around the buttplate of your shotgun. Attach with duct tape; starting on the middle back of the "pad," one piece up over the comb, one down under the heel, and one down each side, then wrap a piece around the stock to hold all those on. And no, the duct tape seems to not damage the wood at all after removal. Works like a miracle, so well in fact that I can comfortably fire both barrels of my SxS simultaneously. I also feel SO ghetto right now...

You can also use a piece of that closed cell foam they use for "egg crate" mattress pads. The egg crate stuff itself isnt that great, but if you can find the flat stuff that is used in upholstery (the 3" thick kind is best) you can cut a little slit in it, place the butt of the gun in the slit and voila! Instant recoil pad. An old tube sock filled with toilet paper and tied around your shoulder works too!

My friend duct taped a towel on the stock of his gun. It served as a cheek pad AND a recoil pad.

I must not be recoil sensative.. I've shot 2 3/4" magnums without a buttpad at all..

though my 1200 came stock with a nice, soft, thick rubber one
