Ballistic gelatin testing results : .223 Remington Nosler Partition

Hello. I am posting here the results of a few tests that I conducted last summer because the results are posted on other websites and not on this one. Really I just wanted to the share the information with you, because when my gelatin powder runs out (~ 3 weeks), that will be the end of the line for me, as far as ballistic gelatin testing is concerned. :

.223 Federal Premium (60 gr. Nosler Partition)

TEST #1

Calibration = 3.9375"= 10cm Vel.= 586 ft./s.

Average impact velocity = 2891 ft./s.

Average recovered diameter = 0.397”

Bullet perforated entire 16" block and ~ 0.25" into loosely packed sandbag.

Firearm = Bushmaster AR-15, plain 16" barrel , 1/9 twist


TEST #2

Calibration = 3.4375"= 8.73cm Vel. = 591 ft./s.

Average impact velocity = 2894 ft./s.

Average recovered diameter = 0.375”

Bullet was tested in compliance with International Wound Ballistic Association 'heavy clothing' test. Test media was covered in 4 loosely-layered pieces of 12.5 ounce denim fabric. Bullet perforated entire 16" block and knocked polyester bullet arresting box off of test stand on bullet exit.

Firearm = Bushmaster AR-15, plain 16" barrel, 1/9 twist

The rounds fired were Federal Premium 'Vital Shock' with Nosler Partition bullets. They can be bought by non-LE civilians for around $1 per round, but can be handloaded for around 60 cents a round, using all new components.
