.22 Silhouette recommended rifle?
I'm thinking of getting into smallbore silhouette, looks like alot of fun on the cheap!
I've been looking into a .22 plinker and was thinking semiauto, probably a Marlin 60. Would the 19" barrel be okay for silhouette, or would I be better off getting something longer that isn't a semiauto? I'm guessing bolt action is the way to go. Marlin has some bolt actions that are inexpensive, I think the tube-fed 22" 981T could double as a plinker. Then there's always the Ruger 77/22, Remingtons and CZ's. Thanks for the advice here. |

cz. I had so much fun shooting it the first time with open sights, I'm thinking of taking the scope back off of it and shooting it glassless!

What are the rules? Do they have classes for semi-auto and bolt? I'd check the rulebooks and see which guns qualify, then buy a CZ....
Actually if you can still find one an IZH Biathlon Basic is a great shooter too, not sure how it fits into the rules, but mine flat out shoots. It is a toggle bolt action, basically a Biathlon gun with a simple stock and no sights. The open sights on the CZ's are GREAT, and there is a guy on the CZ forum that sells a really nice rear peep sight and front globe for them.

Rules...
Any action .22lr rifle is allowed, they all compete together. No hi-velocity ammo allowed. Classes are broken down by shooter skill/scores. No shooting coats, you shoot standing up, and a scope is OK (probably a good idea).
15 rounds at each set of silhouettes broken into three groups of five shots. So am I correct in assuming that a carbine like a 10/22 or Marlin 60 is at a disadvantage to a longer-barreled rifle? Is a bolt action typically more accurate for something like this? Which CZ is the way to go? A visit to their site reveals they have a CZ452 Silhouette model, based on the American, but with synthetic stock. No open sights though. I've never fired a scoped rifle, and was kinda planning to start out with open sights and add a scope after awhile. Here's a photo of that CZ

CZ.
It isn't the barrel length, it is the solid lockup and firm stock bedding stock of the bolt action that makes it more accurate than an auto. All that a longer barrel does is give you a longer sight radius with iron sights... which is a big help if you are determined to use them. Real Metallic Silhouette with iron sights is a challenge. I would go straight to a scope or at least peep rear and globe front. Check out www.rimfirecentral.com |
