Brass frame .36

Brass frame .36

Anyone besides me that shoot one. Fess up. My
dad got this one for me long ago. I don’t know when
the cap&ball revolver copies started. But this one is
old for a new one. I couldn’t buy a holster at the time
so had to make this one. Most of the replaceable parts
have been replaced more then once. I have had it salt
blued three times. I shot it a lot. Time to retire it.

So I know that I don’t want another brass frame even
though this one has not ever given me trouble.
I have a Ruger cap&ball, it shoots great but I don’t like
the heft of it. I like the colt 1851 but don’t know if I
want one. Any one know about the 1861 or any other
ideas. I think I want a .36 caliber. I am open to any and
all ideas that have a why with it. Remember I need to
be educated.

Any of you do leather work or make your own holster?[IMG][/IMG]

I think the only difference in the '51 and the '61 is style preference, I love the heft and feel of a '51, and I like the '61 with the fluted Cyl. I prefer the octagonal bbl over the round one, but that's just me. I owned an original 51 a million years ago in another lifetime, and every time I fired it the rammer would fall. I just realized now in over 100 shots fired with my '58 Rem's not once has the rammer fallen. That's about all I know about the '51. I have shot some repro's and don't remember the rammer falling.

51 Vs 61

Howdy,
I have and shoot both 1851s and 1861s (replicas). I like the 51 best, not only for looks but for function. Both have the usual problems (trigger/bolt springs), but I don't like the "creeping" loading lever on the 61. I had the bottom hole on the bottom of the barrel strip out. When loading it, the ball would almost seat, then the loading lever would fall out. It cost as much to get it fixed as it would have to buy a new barrel. The 51 has a nice positive set up for the loading lever.
The brass will last if you keep your loads moderate and I like the brass look.

I MUST SAY, that is a fine looking "homemade" holster.
Good Luck,
Lee

Tinker2,
I second the Great looking holster!! Very nice. Woulda said so in my first post, but The picture didn't load here.
I also second the rammer thing. I prefer the '51 for that aspect also. I don't like the "walking beam type rammers. A fulcrum is a fulcrum, A walking beam isn't.
