Mak 90-SKS
Gentleman,
I have a mak 90 that I bought right after the ban. At first I thought I'd hate the thumbhole stock but its actualy very comfortable to shoot. I also have 2 sks's. My question is, except for the removable mag does the mak 90 have any benifits over the sks? I dont even consider the mag a plus because with the stripper clips the sks loads very quickly. They are similar in length, wieght, accuracy, ease of maintenance etc. Does anyone have any experience to give one the edge over the other? Thanks, Ken |

I have a NHM90 and 91 and I prefer them over the SKS. A good friend of mine owns a SKS with a long barrel and that thing can do 2" groups at 100 yards. I wish my NHMs can group like that. josh

The op-rod in the AK is connected to the bolt carrier, rather than impacting it. So there would be less wear on the rifle, Also, the trigger mech is much simpler, (basically just a mousetrap!) so any problems in triggerland should be easier to diagnose. The SKS does have a longer barrel, so it has potential for slightly better accuracy than an ak, but is also more cumbersome.

My MAK 90 is a AK with a detach mag. I also have a SKS with a detach mag. I bought a fixed mag well for the SKS. I want to give the SKS a try as a hog gun. I don't like to walk around in the woods with a long mag hanging out the bottom of the gun. Plus people say the fixed mag is more reliable. I'm fixing to find out. I have had a few hickups with both guns. The SKS is more accurate than the AK. Or at least with my two guns! But the AK has the cool factor!

I prefer the sks to an ak.the ak has a faster lock up time because of the way the gas mechanism is designed but the sks does have the edge is accuracy.
the ak has bigger tolerances in metal to metal fit, sheetmetal receiver or a milled receiver, barrel group rivited in place.sks has either pinned barrel or a screw in barrel, receiver is milled.ak is more compact, especially the smaller versions utilizing the krinkov systems.the selector handle on the ak is noisy Ive heard tales of aks being found in the jungle, action kicked open and they fire.aks found in mud and almost rusted shut and still work, aks with rails partially missing and they continue to work.Dont know if any of it is true but I do know the ak was designed to be very reliable in the most filthy of conditions. |

SKS is definatly more affordable!
I own a chinese SKS that I love. It was the first rifle i've ever owned so I guess i'm probably a little partial to it. I have seen alot of add-ons for SKSes and the only ones that are worth a damn are: 1. scope mount by leapers. And other scope mount is worthless!! 2. Choate Dragonov Stock. THE ONLY OTHER STOCK WORTHWHILE! The ATI Fiberforce dragonov is absolutely the WORST stock ever made for any rifle ever!!! |

Except for price, I think the AK is far superior to the SKS because of the availablity of high quality, cheap, reliable 30 round mags. If you have a $300 MAK-90, you really don't need a $100 SKS. But I know some people want to have everything.
