.22 silhouette scope?
What should I look for in a .22 silhouette scope? Variable power makes sense, but how much? 3.5x10, 4.4x14, 6.5x20?
Have heard about Leupold being great, but of course pricey. How about scopes from Bushnell, Weaver, etc? |

I have a Burris 4 - 12 Rimfire/airgun scope with target knobs on a Ruger 77/22 mag and I paid $250 for it. I think the optics on it are at least as good as any Leupold I have seen.

Somewhat depends on how steady the shooter is. If you tend to shake /sway allot, it's best to stay with 12 or 16X or less. If you can hold it like a rock, then 32X isn't too much. As with any brand, some lines/modles are "OK" and some are awsome. Generally speaking, I'd suggest something that tops in the 18-24X range , with fine crosshairs and a 1/8min dot. However, power and even objective size don't gaurentee clarity. ( i.e 24x is no good if it looks like your shooting through a fog at dusk.) I'd look at the mid range models made in Japan. They will cost a bit more than the stuff made in China /Korea but the optics are usually a step above.
FWIW, I have an 10 yr old jap, Tasco 6-24x40AO that I love for that game. It always gets comments on it's clarity from those that try it at our silhouette matches. |
