Wally-World Idiots

So I just got back from Wally World. Always thought the complaints about them must be a little exagerated...how can they be THAT bad?? Well, it's become clear to me that they are, indeed, that bad.

Went to one in Westchester County, NY. They had a Marlin lever action 30-30 for $290. I figure cool, always wanted one, I'll take it.

I show the associate my drivers license (NY) and tell him I live in NYC, here's my NYC shotgun/rifle permit, which you also need to see. "Oh no, I don't need that, just your license." Idiot/poorly trained mistake #1; he should know that he does, especially since the store is only 30 minutes outside NYC, so he should know the law.

"OK, but I really believe that you do", I tell him, and I fill out the paperwork. He looks it over, says it's fine. I hand him my license again so he can do the background check, and now the manager comes over to see the paperwork, and tells me "No, you are from one of the 5 boroughs in the city, I can't sell to you." Idiot/poorly trained mistake #2.

So I tell him "huh? I have my NYC shotgun/rifle permit right here, I can buy from anywhere in NY City AND in NY State, and have done so."

And he tells me "no, you have to get a letter from your precinct, they have to approve any specific purchase, and then you have to go to a specific place in Staten Island or Long Island with that letter." Idiot/poorly trained mistake #3; there is NO law in the world that says that, and if there is then he is the only person in the world who knows about it. Or maybe it's a Wally-World policy, I have no idea. But it made me want to contort my face into one of those Bitter Beer Expressions from the commercials and say "WWWHHHHAAAATTTT?????!!!!"

Anyway, rather than argue with such idiotic ideas or policies, I said good day and decided to take my business elsewhere - somewhere that truly knows the laws and does not have idiots working behind the counter.

I begin to take the paperwork with me and the manager tells me I can't take it with me and have to leave it in their care. Fine, all the more reason never to spend a penny there again.

You can believe I'll be sending a letter to Wally World complaining about this...

Anyone else have a recent nightmare story about them?

When I go to any place where I doubt thier knowledge about laws...(Most places...includeing airlines) I'll print out a copy of the appropriate statues and bring them with me just in case.

I'd send a letter of complaint to WalMart.

Then, I'd move to a free state

No use living behind the US iron curtain.

First, I would NOT have left the forms with my name, address etc with them.. period. Secondly, now you know why I relaod and don't buy anything from Wal Mart.. I actually doubt they care that I don't.. too many others that will put up with their untrained, know nothing employees. Other than the usual show how much we care handicappped greeter, Wal Mart sucks...

Many a time i've asked for "that box of PMC 9mm, 115 gr rounds" and I get something else; and have to play this game a couple times before I get the box I want.

"it's not always nice; but you can't beat the price".

Ruger: I don't care, I know I wasn't breaking any laws, so let them keep it, and if anything comes of it then it'll only point out how stupid they are even more so...

The response you got was regional. Having shopped for guns and ammunition at Walmart stores across the country, I can tell you the response differs according to location. Personally, I'd expect the kind of response you got buying a gun anywhere in NY state. There aren't the same kind of restrictions in Ohio, but it still took them almost an hour to sell me a Marlin .30-30, because of their unfamiliarity with the procedures. They just didn't sell that many guns and wanted to cross the T's and dot the I's. In Arkansas, I'm surprised they weren't handing out guns for cash out of the back of a truck, comparatively.

Scrap: I live in Upstate NY, but to my best of recollection, only handguns have any particular restrictions in NYC. I know, even thought I have a pistol permit for ALL the rest of the State, I cannot bring my handgun into NYC. I doubt you were attempting to circumvent any law. It is just another case of stupid Wally World employees and the same for our elected employees passing "dumb and dumder" laws to prevent us law abiding citizens from becoming felons, terorists and bank robbers. When was the last time you read about a pistol permit holding person ever holding up a liquor store or even a person without a "Rap Sheet holding up a store etc. Some how it seems like most all crime is done by poeple with a "Previous Record". I know, I for one, will be moving back to Arizona asap as I can own a pistol there with NO PERMIT. Maybe they trust the average honest citizen there.

Well i'm not gonna defend Wally world. But some states decide that unconstatutional fed. laws do not violate your rights as a us citizen enough. So they pass more restrictive gun laws.
And then there are citys in whitch some of us must reside that decide that even these very restrictive fed. and state laws are not enough so they pass even more restrictive laws.
I get gun catalogs nowdays with banners stateing that will not ship firearms to FFL holders in some states.
If citizens dont start voteing for their freedom with their hands and feet this list will grow.

Ruger: I wish, but you have to have a shotgun/rifle permit in NYC as well, and it's about 60% as much of a hassle to get the shotgun/rifle permit as it is to get the handgun one....ah, god bless the blue states...NOT

Wally-world's gun folk are a tough bunch to work with. Once you find a guy to come behind the counter (10 min. minimum)... Most are too stiff to reach the lock on the bottom of the ammo cabinets. Most also know nothing about ammo and work in toys, automotive etc.

On the bright side... they are usually nice people and for the inexpensive price of the ammo, I could put up with DMV employees.

You want great service? Go to the local gun range and pay the pipers!

Morons should not be near a firearm much less sell them. God forbid that they sell one to a serial killer by mistake. Write a complaint to their main office and tell them to better train their employee.

I feel lucky here

It may be out of the norm I guess but our local wally world has two great guys that work behind the gun counter, very helpfull and knowledgable. One is a younger guy that knows every firearm very well it seems and the other is a retired guy who hunts and shoots regularly.

They know the forms and processes very well and got me through in record time last time I bought a .22 Marlin on a whim close to 10:00 pm, can't buy them here in Michigan after ten.

Now for the rest of the store I hate that place, oh yea last time I was there both of the usual guys were off and it took for ever just to get the box of .22 and .410 shells I was asking for and I could even point to where they were.

topspin I can relate, I live in central Oregon. I went to wally world to get some rem. sub-sonic .22lr (some folks I know have rodent trouble on there 160 acre farm, rockchucks and sage rats) there is a housing development about a 1/4 ml. out from there property. the friend I was going with to shoot told me he had picked up this ammo at walmart. when I eventually got some help at the counter the employee told me they did not carrie that ammo, I told him a friend of mine picked some up here the other day. he begrudgently bent down to take a look and told me they were out. I had to walk around to other side of the counter and try to point out the green box with the words sub-sonic. what's up with that ? but that's not all, when I got my 100rnds. of the godless .22lr ammo to the check out (I'm sure the eye's on the ceiling were tracking me) the checker asked me if I was useing this ammo in a rifle or pistol ? well by this time my patients were wearing thin, I told her it was none of her business. the manager came to the rescue to inform the checker this question is to be asked to those between the age of 18 and 21. and again my patients were wearing thin. I told them both this is a stupid idea if I were a 19 year old with a .22 lr pistol I would say (rifle). IMHO walmart sucks at least this one.

yeah walmart has crappy service. took 20 minutes to get a guy to even get behind the counter. the guy got so confused when we told him i needed 150 grain 30-06. he handed me a 180 grain box of 30-06 and on try two it was .308 ammo... the only reason i bothered to go to wally world was because the place i usually go is closed on sundays. ugh!

One of our Walmarts has/possibly used to have (haven't seen him lately) a guy who worked in the back of the store on paper, but always seemed to be around the sporting goods in reality. If it weren't for a lack of money, I probably would have bought any gun he told me to (he was that good).

By the end of one lucky trip there, he'd shown (let me fondle?) about a quarter of the firearms on display.

... On the flipside, there's an employee at our other walmart who I asked for some "Seven point six-two by fifty-four R"... He looked for a bit, then said "We've got some 7.62x39... It's a bit smaller, but it should fit alright."

Wolfe... (Who's worried about that last guy's customers...)

Not that Wally isn't a super evil retail giant. Not that they don't put millions of people out of jobs. No I truly do hate the sumbiztch. But it doesn't help when you live in a commy state anyway. I think its truly discusting that you have to purchase a permit to buy anything. Its a funny thing but I can't remember: "And you have to buy permits and be 21, and suck ---- to get a gun." In the constitution. But hey what do I know

Man, buying a gun at WalMart is easy as the proverbial pie where I live. It's like grimjaw's description of Arkansas...they make it very very easy.

Both rifles I've bought at WalMart took less than 30 minutes, from entering the store to exiting with the manager by my side.

But I live in a pretty rural area with a lot of farmers and even more gun enthusiasts.. who I'm sure are on the other side of the counter as well.

Though they don't know everything; I once had a guy tell me that there were no gauges above 12 gauge... and another say that all .22 rounds (short, long, .223, .22-250, LR, .22 mag, etc.) were completely interchangeable "if the rifle is built properly, like they was used to."

Last one i tryed to buy from w-m i told them to keep it, it was an hour after the call they had the ok but after she got though tripple checking my app she called a manager, you know how long that takes. and then he started checking my app, got out some cards with slots cut out and placed them over the app after around his double check i told him where to place the rifle.

The rifle before that took almost a week!!! i guess the ok came right after we left but it took a week to get some one who knew what was going on

Well I work on the other side of the counter and I see my fair share of idiots as well. There was the time a drunk mexican came into the store and wanted to buy a handgun for $50. (I can't make this stuff up.) Then there was they guy who insisted .308 and 30-06 where the same thing. (Management had to ask him to leave.) Then the drunks buying guns on the day before the season opener. (We send them out the door empty.)

I don't like wal-mart ether heres why.

About five years ago me and my dad went to wal-mart later at night about 10:00 to buy my first gun (NEF.410) and the guy that was there said that he could not sell the .410 becuase they just got a new shipment of them and had to do inventory or something like that so he said to come back tomorrow so we leave for about 30mins and come back to buy some .22s when we showed up we see this guy selling the same gun we were going to buy to what appeared to be his buddy then after he says bye to his friend he says to us that he "found" one more gun that he could sell us so as we just got done filling out the forums the guy says makes us redo it becuase my dad put 5'11" and 3/4 as his height so after we fill out the forums for the second time he sells us the gun.

And about a two years later we were going to buy a .22 and the guy there says that since there is no display model there was not any left and we asked him to check the books to see if there was any more in back and he would not do it finally some one else comes and checks the books and there was six of them in back.

And another time we went there to buy some .22lr and the lady gives me .22shorts.

And yet another time we went there to buy some .22s (now keep in mind that I am only 14years old)And the lady that was there keep telling me that they did not have the .22s that I was asking for yet I am looking right at the ones I want to buy so after 5 mins of arguing with this lady she says to just go back and get the ones you want youself so I did and she sure had a surprised look on her face when I picked them up and put them on the counter. It just seems like whenever I go there I seem to know more about guns and ammo then they do.Oh well guess thats Wally-World for ya.

At least now they have someone there who know what he is talking about.

Hmmm, never bought a gun from wallyworld, thank god! It's always been from a gun shop, gun show or my local Academy Sports and Outdoors (they sell AR-15's and standard capacity mags, so I know they don't buy into the PC bullcrap). So far everyone's known what to do and my father has had no problems (except the time that his DL was expired, and then, the guy just told him that it was expired and that he couldn't sell the gun to him, real nice about it)

As for ammo, yeah, they don't know what they're doing most of the time, but I've been saved from a couple mistakes by a knowledgeable wal-mart employee too.

Once I was so caught up in finally having a scope to put on my .22 that I almost bought remington 700 rings!

And on another occasion, I didn't realize that the winchester box of 7.62x39 only had 20 rounds in it (a 8 bucks a box!) The employee just told me to go to Academy Sorts and Outdoors, saying that he couldn't afford to buy 7.62x39 at wal-mart.

And since I shoot skeet competitively, and buy lots of shotgun shells, I'll go ahead and thank god that the shotgun shells aren't behind the counter.....most of the time.

Last time I looked at Wally World I dont think the guy was knowledgable about firearms but he did pull out his stock book and looked for what I wanted a price on.

I was looking at all the guns at WM and the wanted to check out the Savage with the new accutrigger. The gun had a big red sticker pointing to the trigger with all sorts of complimentary messages on it. I asked the salesman if the trigger was all that good (as if he would know.) He stood there and dry fired it about a dozen times telling me what a wonderful innovation it was. He then handed it to me and I asked if I could dry fire it. He said no, it's against store policy. ***#1: you just stood there and broke company policy multiple times. ***#2: the trigger is the main selling point of this rifle and you won't let the customer find out if the trigger is really any good? COME ON!!
