SW 1911DK or Colt Gold Cup Trophy...

I wanted to get some opinions about these two particular guns.

Both are about the same price around here, and I am torn between them. I will be using the gun strictly for range/target shooting and plinking, with the thought that eventually I might do some competitions.

SW 1911DK -
I've recently heard some good things about S&W 1911's. I particularly like the set of features on this model such as the ambi-safety, beavertail grip safety, "speed hammer", mag well, etc. (I don't like the looks of the flat trigger). This one's also got the edge in the looks department (two tone).

Colt Gold Cup Trophy -
This has got the edge in the fact that it's a Colt. I know that it supposedly also has a match-grade barrel. However, I would have to add a few things to get it the way that I would like it (beavertail, magwell, etc.). I would like to find one in blue that has Bomar sights (I've only seen the stainless w/ the Bomars?).

I'm want the best, most accurate shooter. I have shot a Gold Cup Trophy before, and I liked it. I have not shot the SW 1911DK, but I've heard some good things (and I love the way it looks!!).

Does anyone have any experience with these?

The quality on most of the high end 1911s has equalized over the years to a certain degree. If the S&W has the features you want and if you prefer its esthetics, I think you should get the S&W.

My SW1911 has been an excellent CCW/HD pistol and I think that S&W offers the best value for the dollar in its genre. It is extremely accurate in my hands and carries one of the best lifetime warrenties in the biz.

The Colt will not be cheap and you still want to do some work to it... do the math. Colt does make a fine 1911, but I am not sure that owning the brand means a whole lot on the range or in a combat situation.

Blessings,

SW 1911 108284 target model

I wanted a full size 1911 and narrowed it down to Smith Sprigfield or Colt. I have 4 inch Kimber, and wanted to try different make. I finally decide SW and tried the target model and the DK version, the normal target model had the better fit and finish, and trigger feel. I don't think you could go wrong with either, handle both if possible. Accuracy and fit finish exceed my Kimber fututure 1911 will be SW unless quality goes down and they give me a reason not to buy.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately I have not been able to try the SW 1911DK yet (or see one in person for that matter). They are a little hard to find around here.

I live about an hour away from the S&W factory in Springfield, MA...so I might have to make a trip to their range & store (which I hear is really nice) to check out a couple models in person.

I have shot a Gold Cup Trophy, and it was great. I think I might need to get an in-person comparison before I buy.

Two words: Life-time warranty. Get the S&W.

having friends.....

The DK I tried was nice; the DKs I've handled are nice; the S&W 1911s as a line are nice.

What's a Colt? and who makes it?

While not the exact pistols you are looking at, I just did a comparison between a SW1911 and a Gold Cup.

I never thought I would say it, I'm a diehard Colt guy........... For a gun straight out of the box, I'd go with the SW1911DK. If the straight trigger bothers you, swap in a McCormick trigger and be done with it.

The Gold Cup Trophy does not have the wide Gold Cup trigger, and when you are talking about two guns that will be durable, and more accurate than most of us can hope to shoot, the existing features are the deciding factor. SW1911DK wins, hands down.

It hurts me to say that too.
