Interesting Test: Guns vs a Buick

Here's one of the most interesting threads I've ever seen. Its over at AR15.com. Various handguns and longuns were tested against the Buick's windows and doors. Albeit an informal test but still very informative and eye opening.

Here's the link to "Buick O Truth"

Not new info

But not often repeated. Shooting through glass DOES deflect bullets. Even rifle bullets. Even regular window glass @90 degrees has been shown to deflect shots. Once upon a time (don't know about today) police snipers were taught to shoot in teams, one guy's job was to break the window, a second shooter to make the shot. tricky timing, but it can be done.

FWIW, I bet it was pretty LOUD inside that car!

i found it interesting that most of the slugs were deflected upwards into the target................. i'd have thought the opposite with the angle of the wind shield and all...........

Very insightful, however it would have been nice to see how JHPs behave since very few of us carry any FMJ ammo.

I was able to view a DEA training video a few years back. In the vid, a guy drives up in an old Caprice, and gets out. Agents step up, armed with handguns, AR rifles, and Shotguns with 00 Buck. They proceed to shoot the car for what seems like an eternity.
When the smoke clears, the instructor opens the back car doors, and there crouched in the floorboards, is a cardboard dummy. Not a critical wound on him. Same in the front seat, another dummy.
Then the instructor wipes off the glass from the drivers seat, gets in, cranks the car up, and drives away.
Quite a different deal from what you see in the movies.

A few years ago at Dugway Proving Grounds here in Utah, the Dugway Police ran tests on a series of vehicles with several types of military and non-military handguns and long guns. The best performer was the shotgun slug. When shooting into a vehicle, the 9mm performed poorly, heavier bullets worked better. When shooting into windows, almost all bullets were deflected unless fired almost perfectly perpendicular to the window. The windshield deflected all handgun bullets fired at it from a standing position in front of the vehicle, and deflected most rifle bullets. There was a film made of it, and it's results, but I am not certain where you could get a copy of it. It would be very interesting to watch. I learned of it when my father was a member of the Dugway Police.

When shooting a windshield you can cause more injuries from spraying glass into the drivers eyes and face than actually shooting him. Conversly if you ever shoot out your own windshild CLOSE YOUR EYES FIRST! It might save you from being blind the rest of your life.
