Website posting leads to robbery of Newcastle gun owner
May 06, 2006 - 8:32 am
By: Jason Satur

Durham Police say thieves likely used a website posting to trace a gun owner, break into his Newcastle home, rip his safe off the wall and steal rifles, shotguns, pistols and bullets.

Durham Police Detective Constable Geoff Ingram urged gun owners to be cautious in posting information that could be used to identify themselves. In this case, Ingram said the victim had some guns for sale on a website and posted his home phone number.

The thieves broke in sometime Thursday afternoon and ransacked the home.

The cache of weapons including two rifles, three shotguns, three pistols, two samurai swords and a .50-calibre muzzle loader were all legally owned and stored with trigger locks.

The crooks simply yanked the safe from the wall it was bolted to and escaped, according to Ingram.

Don't overlook the possibility of having a break-in if you have a bumper sticker that reads something like "I'm a gun owner and proud of it". I haven't heard of any NRA bumper stickers being blamed for break-in's, but they HAVE caused some vehicles to be "church-keyed" by vandals!

Also, while you're somewhat "anonymous" on the internet, you are NOT anonymous when your firearms are registered! Just WHO has access to those "official" gun records?

Several years ago, a very diligent police detective noticed a very definite pattern in several residential break-in's. The pattern was that the victims were all gun owners and owned several firearms....and that the firearms appeared to be the focal point of the break-in's, since other items of value were not taken.

I won't go into detail, but the investigation of that detective began to narrow down to the possibility (actually the probability) that an employee of the California Department of Justice was involved, since they are responsible for collecting gun registration information. That "theory" turned out to be CORRECT, for a young female employee of the Calif DOJ had been doing "computer runs" of gun owners, printing them out, then handing them to her gang-member boyfriend! When the police raided the boyfriend's residence, they recovered several of the stolen firearms AND gained info regarding additional suspects involved, which culminated in the arrest of 8 people!

If you aren't required to register your firearms, DON'T! Just make sure that you document all pertinent info regarding your firearms, in case of theft.

And DON'T brag about your "arsenal", unless it's to your close friends and family members that you TRUST! No one NEEDS to know what firearms you own unless you go "ballistic"!

Good point, but...

1. Use anonymity and not your real name and you shouldn't have a problem.

2.

Errrm, that's not a 'real' safe in my book, if they're able to do that without a lot of time, tools, dollys/hoists, etc.

Hell, I wouldn't even let family know that I own a firearm! Keep that stuff to yourself; no need to brag.

I don't tell anyone except Family what type and how many firearms that I own. If asked by others, I tell them I own a couple. I don't give out information on type or quantity.

I have a standard reply for people who ask me how many guns I have. It doesn't matter if it's someone I just met or a friend of many years.
"Nunnayerdambizness!"
Some friends are shocked by this reply; others say, "Good answer!"

One of my students (7th grader) was popping off in class about how many guns a relative of his owns. I took him aside and explained how this was a bad idea, and what things could result from it. His eyes got big and I think he got the message.....

+1 Just goes to show that a lot of people, regardless of age just don't bother even thinking about what they want to say before they say it.

It was a happy day for me when I could start answering that question truthfully with "You know what? I don't know."

It's a very old practice for some criminals to look at society columns in the paper 'Mr&Mrs jones are leaving for a three week tour of France' .Thanks for the info !! Tell people about vacations AFTER you've come back. ..Keeping my mouth shut was taught to me by my father when I was a little kid.

First of all, I want to thank OBIWAN for his post. Second, I applaud those of you who responded FAVORABLY!

There was a similar post in another forum board, and I responded with the TRUE story about the dishonest California DOJ employee. Guess what? There were mixed reactions in the responses, ranging from "good info" to "I'm PROUD of my vast collection of firearms and will CONTINUE to list them! It's my RIGHT!" Yeah, right!

I've also used that answer!
I've also said, "None. I only own small arms."
