Shooting & Life Mentors

In reference to this post I made: http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/...postcount=58It prompted me to ask, Who were your shooting mentors growing up? Were they more than just shooting mentors? My friend I mention in that post, Brian, AKA "B" was a shooting, hunting, fishing, and Christian mentor in my youth. My dad busted his rear working as a sales rep and "B" always seemed to be there to take me out fishing, hunting, or shooting. Holidays in SE GA my second cousin James (Dad's cousin) always made sure a deer or bird hunt was available to me and constantly encouraged me as both an outdoorsman and Christian. Looking back now I think more about the life lessons I learned from these two men. They helped shape me in all the right ways during those critical adolescent years. We talk about all the ills of the youth in our society and always look at the broken homes and lack of parenting. I surely had loving parents who also held accountable growing up. I also had these two showing me how to be a man by example in word and deed. Now it's my turn to give back and be that shooting buddy / mentor to a kid in need of one. After this reflective post I'll be keeping my eyes and ears open for that opportunity. If you aren't doing so already I challenge you, my friends here, to do the same. So let's share the stories about our mentors or the kid(s) you're mentoring / have mentored.

Mentors

I was fortunate to have two when I was growing up. My Dad, a WWII vet, and my six-year-older cousin. Dad passed away, but my cousin and I are still very much in contact (even though we're 600 miles apart) and still discuss shooting all the time. Unlimited long-distance phone service and this internet thingamajigger makes it easy.

I'm trying to be a mentor to one of my best friend's sons (21 & 24) and pass along the knowledge I learned to them. That's every bit as much fun as shooting itself! The older one is currently stationed with the US Army in Iraq, and the younger one is enrolled in ROTC in college. They both know how to safely handle a firearm.
