Good 3030 ammo
Anyone know of some good, inexpensive ammo for a model 94? My buddy wants me to sight it in (he has a broken hand), and since I get the pleasure in shooting I get to foot the bill too...

Will he just sight in with it, or use it all the time? I.E. why sight in with something you will not use again? Sight in with what you will be using...

I'd say just get whatever's on sale, shoot it and learn it... especially the difference between 150 and 170 gr.

Ditto the Winchester Silvertips... 170gr seem to rock in my 94's.

It's not brain surgery sighting it in, but I'm a bit more familiar with firearms then him so he asked me to. He wont be shooting much, figure once a month? I have no experiance with 3030 so I dont know whats good and whats not, hence my question. Its probably just going to be a target/fun gun (no further then 100 yds, 150 at most), so I dont *think* 170gr. is neccesary... or is it?
Thanks. -Max. |

For plain-jane rounds, they usually cost the same. 150 shoots a bit flatter and will be a bit easier on the shoulder, so if it's target/fun just sight him in for that and save the 170 for black bear.
They make 125 gr. and the new Leverevolutions are 160 gr. I think, but 150 or 170 has been the standard for years and generally costs less. |

Try Wallmart this time of the year for last years ammo. I just picked up three boxes of 300 weatherby for a friend for $13 a box (norm. is $39). They had 30-30 for $6. Winchester silver box .22 for 3.50. I should be good for a little while

Another vote for the core lokt. There pretty cheap, so you could pick up a box of the 150 gr and 170 gr and see what groups better in that rifle.

+1 on the federals. Plus midway has them on say for 8.99 a box. Good cheap ammo for plinking or hunting..

+1 on Core Lokt
We have a "family" Model 94 that has taken lots of deer over the years, and it shoots 150 or 170 grain bullets (Remington) equally well. But my uncle, who shot most of the deer with it, swore by the 170 HP Core-Lokt. They are hard to find, but they do seem to work better on whitetails. And all of the Core-Lokts are relatively inexpensive.

I've shot core lokt and silvertips. I prefer the Winchester silvertips. They resulted in shorter blood trails. (in my experience anyway) I've also heard lots of good things about Hornady's new Leverevolution if your looking to extend your range.

I shoot the 150 grain whateverischeapest at the range. It shoots flatter and faster than the 170 gr. The leverevolution and fusion is too expensive for plinking. Federal power shock is the cheapest.
