just bought my wife 1st gun
I picked up a Taurus 817 ultra-lite .38 sp. for my wife for christmas. Went with a wheelgun becuase she did'nt like the snap of the slide on my 9mm auto. Does anyone have experience with this model? Looking for a good aftermarket grip, I'm not to crazy about the "ribber" stocks that come on the gun, any suggestions? Also, I got a box of fed. premium 110 gr. .38sp hydra-shok "low recoil", I went with these becuase of our small apartment and I don't think she will be ready for heavy +p loads for a while, will these be good enough for SD?

Good choice thos bullets are the exact sme ones I load in my 357 snubbie, hardly any recoil and they can do some serious damage! Merry Christmas! Oh also try getgrips.com a set of nice wood Hogue grips would be the finishing touch, just make sure they are thin enough to fit her hand. Good Shooting.

Good for you! Make sure you take her to the range to get some practice. When I started my wife out, she didn't take to revolvers, but she had a hard time with the slide also. Ended up getting her a Taurus Milpro DAO. Slide racks very easy. Now we're looking at a keltec for her purse. It never seems to stop at one gun does it!

I don't know anything about the Taurus but bought my SP101 for the exact same reason. The fiance didn't like the action on the semiauto so I picked up the wheelgun a month or two ago. Kind of funny because I really wasn't into revolvers until she told me she thought she'd be happier with one. Now, I can't wait to get a holster because this little .357 will make a great ccw gun. I keep it loaded with Speer gold dot .38 135gr short barrel because I think the .357 will be a bit big for her. She's done great with it so far and actually slipped one day and said "I like to shoot the revolver."
Congrats on the new wheelgun and if your a lucky man she'll actually want to go to the range with you. JKWas when I bought my Smith and Wesson I told her don't worry sweetheart this will be the only one I get. Whatever, I can think of two or three right now that I'de like! |

Good choice
Bought a snub nose Taurus for mine two years ago, she had never shot a firearm till a year before that. We wanted something that didn't really kick much but was OK for self defense. Now she owns four of her own and keeps surprising me how well she shoots. She likes the " pretty ones" a Golden Boy and a Ruger MKIII Hunter both .22's. She is also shooting very good groups with a 270 I have down loaded a bit.
Your doing the right thing with the light loads. |

I think you made a good choice on a first time gun. I may have selected a 357 model which would still allow shooting the milder 38 loads and also allow her to move up to magnum loads when the time comes. Can't comment on the Taurus as I am a S&W fan, but the hydrashocks are a great choice. I carry them in all my CCW guns.
