Here are a few fictional quotes attributed to various founding fathers, and whatnot. They are all fictional, or at least completely unverifiable, meaning there are no records that the person actually said it. It's a pity so many people use these, and ones like them, because there are many great and TRUE quotes by our founding fathers that clearly support our positions.

"This year* will go down in history! For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration! Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!"

---Falsely attributed to Adolf Hitler, "Abschied vom Hessenland!" ["Farewell to Hessia!"], ['Berlin Daily' (Loose English Translation)], April 15th, 1935, Page 3 Article 2, Einleitung Von Eberhard Beckmann [Introduction by Eberhard Beckmann].

"The most effective means of fighting crime in the United States is to outlaw the possession of any type of firearm by the civilian populace."

---Falsely attributed to Janet Reno, then-state attorney for Dade County, speech to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida B'nai B'rith gathering, ca.1991.

(By the way, the quote where Reno defines a cultist as anyone who believes in the bible, homeschools their childeren, etc, is completely false as well.)

"Our task of creating a socialist America can only succeed when those who would resist us are totally disarmed."

---Falsely (hilariously?) attributed to Sarah Brady of Handgun Control, Inc. supposedly in The American Educator, published by the American Federation of Teachers (or alternatively, attributed to a speech to AARP, late 1991)

"Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence. The church, the plow, the prairie wagon, and citizen's firearms are indelibly related. From the moment the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to ensure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable. Every corner of this land knows firearms, and more than 99 99/100 percent of them by their silence indicate they are in safe and sane hands. The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference; they deserve a place of honor with all that's good. When firearms, go all goes; we need them every hour."

-Falsely attributed to George Washington

"The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."

- Falsely attributed to Thomas Jefferson

That "liberty teeth" "quote" from Washington; Sounds like somebody cribbed it from a speach by Patrick Henry. Had the word "percentage" even been coined when Washington was alive?

"Percentage" was one of the terms that are mentioned as suspect, Brett. Very observant. They also mentioned the fact that "covered wagons" were not heading weat at the time.

BTR-
I've long been compiling a set of quotes. This site is a real help and caused me to delete a few that I'd not really questioned. Thanks much for the heads up. Great resource!

What a fascinating website! I've used that fake quote before, too, so I'm glad somebody said something.

What about the quote where Reno defines a cultist according to three attributes:
1. A large store of food
2. Strong belief in God
3. Possession of firearms?

I've always wondered about that one--no matter what Reno thinks in private, it sounds prohibitively stupid to say it publicly.

Yes, Gwinnydapooh, the quote of Reno defining a cultist is also completely fake. It was supposedly on 60 Minutes. She has never been on 60 Minutes. She has denied in writing saying anything of the sort. It's a just a bit too inflamatory to be true.

Also- if you see a document floating around on the internet (and this board) purporting to be a secret memo of HCI or the whitehouse, detailing a multi-year plan to ban guns, camo clothing, hunting, subversive literature, and whatnot is various stages. It's also a compelete fake. I don't recall where I read it's thourough debunking, but the clincher was the author of memo given wasn't with HCI at the time, or something like that.

Gwinny,

I really like your phrase, "prohibitively stupid"!

Unfortunately, the activities of the current regime (especially of the Democrats) seem to indicate that arrogance can be so great it overwhelms the entire concept of "prohibitively stupid".

Its a shame those quotes are false, but we still have Thomas Jeffersons famous line to Adams: "Keep your stinking statist hands off my musket or I'll blow your nuts off with my fowling piece".

Well BTR If they didn't say the words, I SURELY BET THAT THEY WERE THINKING THOSE QUOTES. Thanks for the link.

How about these:
"Little more can be reasonably aimed at with respect to the people at large than to have them properly armed and equipped. The scheme of disciplining the whole nation must be abandoned as mischievous and impracticable." Alexander Hamilton

"To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them." Richard Henry Lee, 1787

"A free people ought to be armed." George Washington, 1790

"The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able may have a gun." Patrick Henry

"The Constitution shall never be construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the press or the rights of conscience; or to prevent the people of The United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms." Samuel Adams

"Unfortunately, nothing will preserve public liberty but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined" Patrick Henry.

To own firearms is to affirm that freedom and liberty are not gifts from the state.
