win 94 30-30 ---NEED ADVICE

I have my eyes on Win 30-30 model 94. Its at Gander Mountain, they just got it in from a trade. They want $249 for it, ok the bad news, the receiver area is really faded bad, bluing is gone, (both sides) entire area. The bluing on the barrel is in great shape and so is the stock. I tried to go lower but the guy said they just got it 2 days ago.

Pass or let it go.

I'd buy it. I was probably well used if the finish is light on the receiver because that is where most people carried it. If the bore looks good and they let you work to the action a couple of times and everything still feels tight it would be a good buy.

maybe I used the wrong term "faded" More like real bad water damage? Its like hood on a car with really bad oxidation on (in) the paint. The only way to fix it would to reblue it .

the gun I'm looking at is slightly a little better, not much. This was the cheapest gun on gunbroker.com. Most start at a reserve of $300 or higher.

Isn't the value going up on these since they are no longer in production?

I've got one NIB...it's a beauty!

I would prolly get it. I got one for christmas from my dad and he also got it at gander mountian. He said when they get them in they only list them for around 125 to 175 range. but the one i got they didnt even have on the shelf yet. He got it for $150. It had some rust on the reciever and some on the barrell. It shoots real well. Though since they arnt made anymore i would probally get it. The blueing on any gun is gonna wear off eventually unless u reblue it.Go ahead and get it.

If you want it, you want it.

5 years ago you could have had it for $150 or less in that kind of condition. I guess people are bidding them up now......

It's probably not a bad price if we're talking about a pre-'64 with all machined parts.

I would get it also. I have a 94 in .32 Special that I absolutely love. If the bore is clear and not pitted and the action is tight then its probably a good deal. If the receiver blueing bothers you thats a cheap fix anyways. You can cold blue it yourself for less than 10 bucks or a have a gunsmith do it for a little more. Either way you should end up with a great gun for less than $300. Winchester 94's I believe have been steadily going up in value anyways so you should always be able to make your money back if you decide to sell it later. Hope this helps.

Best hunting rifle is one that you can ride hard and put up wet without feeling guilty. I'd buy it just for that reason.

Not a pre 64 , the serial number is 4923xxx, I believe production was 1981 ? What were the changes they made ?

The receiver could be the cast or howevermade kind that doesn't take bluing well and develops a kind of rash. There may be other things different from the older, pre-64 guns. A rebounding hammer, stamped shell carrier and I don't know what else. I've got a 80's gun, rash on receiver but it shoots well.

For $249... get it! It will not go down in value and if you carry it enough the receiver should show bluing wear. Bet that rifle has been through the woods enough to know it's way around!

Was just at a pawn shop yesterday....they had one of that vintage with a scope for 350....listed....probably would go lower..
If you're looking for something in particular let us know....we have plenty, just not $250....

Bought it. Now the question to reblue or not? They sell kits, is it easy as they make it sound?

If you are going to do it yourself, make sure you steel wool the entire area you want to reblue, instead of the specific spot.
Use some blue and rust remover, (which by the way you can get at wally world), and super fine steel wool the entire area.
After you have it smoothed and even clean it with good rubbing alcohol, rinse with water and dry it real good.
Now, use a fine texture sponge and rub the blue into the entire area.
Let it sit for about a minute and then rinse under cold water, dry it off real good again and repeat the alcohol, rinsing and blueing steps until it is dark enough for you.
Oil it up with a good gun oil and let it sit overnight. In the morning you can rub it down real good with an oily cloth and she will shine like new.
Congratulations by the way, I own 4 94's all bought used, and they are my go to's for just about everything.
Ya done good.

I'm a little late but I'll chime in anyway

I have a 1982 short barreled 94 (Ranger?) with the exact same complexion issues.
I bought mine for $125 or so a few years ago
I might sell it for $250 but I would have to be pretty broke and hungry

The company going out of business did boost the prices but the guns they were making at the time were as different from the 80'2 as the 80's gun were different from the 60's.

Don't reblue it.

Just build up a layer of protection with a PTFE enhanced oil product and shoot the thing.

There's a website that'll reveal the year of manufacture via the serial number.

Standard cold blue solutions don't work very well on late-model Winchester 94 receivers, due to the metallurgy involved. However, there are places that will put the proper finish on it.

Have tried to reblue using many methods on that vintage of Winchester, and most come out a dull color of plum.....Iron plting was used by Winchester during this time which would accept the blueing, but nobody does that nowadays. The best appearing finish that we have used is a semigloss or glossy powder coat....It's hard to tell it from original....If you're not trying to keep it original, but just want to make it look better and keep from oxidizing, chrome plate it or nickel plate....my .02 worth...

The process involves totally disassembling the receiver, cleaned polished and then coated.....usually runs around $90-100...looks really good when done though...give me your email and i'll send a pic of one i did several months ago....
