Good varmint scope for around $300
im looking for a good varmint scope to put on my model 700 .204. currently i have a barska 6-24x42 varmint scope on there. this scope is Okay but it can get a little blurry on the highest setting and i just want to put a little better scope on it. i want to get something around the same power as this scope, maybe even a 4-20 or somewhere along those lines, but no less than 16x. i really dont want to spend $300 on a scope, more around the $200 range but i will if i have to. can you guys recommend a good scope? thanks a lot.

Try theopticzone.com for prices on various scopes, they seem to be in the ballpark for prices compared to most other sites.
$300 is a difficult price to get a high quality varmint 6-24 scope. There are good to decent ones out there for $300 but there is a good chance that eventually you will want better glass if you shoot alot or at great distances. My .02 cents is to save your money a little longer and look at higher quality scopes if you shoot alot. leupold, Burris, Nikon, Bushnell elite are all nice products but are all pretty much beyond your price range. Or, buy a used leupold varmint scope....they are very high quality in the VX-III line and will last a lifetime.

I know it's under your power range, but I have a Bushnell 3200 Elite 5-15X40 that is a very nice scope for the money. Very clear even on 15 power. A little shopping around, and you should be able to find one for $300. Comes with an aluminum sunshade too!

Here is your Scope
http://www.durhamoutdoorsupply.com/b.../32-5155m.html
It's a great store and the cheapest around. I have ordered a few scopes from them. If you want more power keep looking on that site and you'll find it at the best price...

On a budget
I'd go with
Tasco/Super Sniper, fixed 16x (or fixed 20), $299 http://www.swfa.com/c-231-super-snip...le-scopes.aspx or Millett Buck Gold Target/Varmint 6-24x56, 30mm, AO $289 or so. http://www.millettsights.com/index.p...007/buck_gold1 or Barska SWAT Tactical line, 6-24x60mm, 30mm, side focus, $299 http://www.swfa.com/pc-6031-765-bars...0mm-scope.aspx I'm kinda down on the Muellers anymore, though an Eradicator 8-25x50 for about $259 is not overly terrible of a value. http://www.muelleroptics.com/products/MU852550IGR.html |

Why do you insist on at least a 16x? I can't see where a 12 or 14x scope with good resolution isn't enough for a varmint scope - especially on a 204 RUG. What type of varmint are you hunting? ... Crickets? -tINY |

That's a decent price for a nikon monarch, that may be just what the OP should consider.

tINY, I see where's he's coming from...true enough, you don't need more than 10 or 12 power to make the hit on a l'il critter, but it's more FUN when you can see the details of his features up close and personal before taking the shot. I like a minimum maximum (if that makes sense) of 20x for any scope for targets or varmints. Preferably 24x max with a 50+ objective. After that, you get real diminishing returns as far as exit pupil, blackout, and mirage effects go, so I don't see much point in 32x or 40x or 50x scopes unless you're doing highpower competition. With a 40-44mm objective, no point in going past 16x or 18x. Just my .02.
And I can't see paying the price for high end Nikon, Leupold, and the like for a varminter scope, UNLESS you think you'll be hunting them at sunup and sundown. And tINY, as far as crickets go, go over to rimfirecentral and look at some peeps' targets where they've splattered houseflys on the target at 100+ yards with a .17 HMR. [Put some jelly on the target and they'll come in .... ]goalie, the Wild gonna hang onto that 8th spot for playoffs? |

I'm an eastern 'chuck hunter and I am sold on fixed 10X. The 3200 in 10 power is a tremendous value. I do own one of the better( ?) Tascos but it gathers dust. I'd rather own a better quality fixed scope than a so-so Variable. I suppose most would disagree with me. Essex

Good varmint scope for under $300?
Not very likely. At least, not new. OTOH, you MIGHT find a decent used one for $300-$400.

Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40SF. It can see better in the dark than I can and it has side focus so it can be mounted as low as possible. It was $350 though.
