What high-quality 9mm hi-caps are out there?

I want a "fun gun" for the range that (to quote a favorite movie) "holds a lotta bullets".

The thing is that I'm really picky about fit and finish. I want something that I have no excuse to "upgrade" from, as "upgrading" is fun but costs me a lot of money!!! Bad James!

I don't like polymer guns and I loove beautiful, well-crafted, accurate guns with superb fit and finish...

The Colt Python is to revolvers as the ___________ is to 9mm hi-caps.

or like

A Les Baer 1911 is to 1911s as the ___________ is to 9mm hi-caps.

Put "Belgian made Browning Hi Power" in both blank spaces.

Hi Powers are about as beautiful as it gets, but pricey.

In my opinion a Beretta 92 FS is a gorgeous, extremely well made gun. The action is smooth as glass.

I got my Italian made 92FS new in box for $499 plus tax. That's what they are going for at the moment. Mags are in good supply and affordable, and te craftsmanship is top notch.

I was going to suggest a Ruger KP95 until you said no to

polymer (plastic).... so I guess I'll have to suggest a KP-89.

I'd leave the ported barrel off though... not worth it and actually a detriment if shooting inside or even outside under a covered roof.

IMO, an EAA Witness or CZ75 (either B or SP01 or 85).

When compared to a Python or Les Baer as in the OP, they really aren't that pricey.

I recently bought a CZ 75 Compact 9mm and Kadet .22 adaptor. They have quickly become the "family" guns, accurate, dependable and fun. The CZ 9mm holds 14+1 and is very naturally a good shooter. Mike

If you exclude polymer - then I second the Beretta.

Beretta 92FS

Howdy,

Beretta 92FS. Unbeateable for reliability, ease of maintanence, smooth action, eats anything, attractive (according to many) and proudly serves our fighting men and women in uniform. I've had one failure in approximately 7,000 rounds.

Larry C.

PS: Make sure to use Beretta mags.

The Browning Hi Power is the icon of 9mms. Once you've handled one, anything else feels like a brick.

gotta give another vote for the beretta, although for a few bucks less, i cant tell mcuh difference at all between my beretta and friends taurus 92. the taurus is made in the old brazillian beretta factory so i assume its the same pistol. i like my beretta trigger a little better but other than that, id have saved $300 by buying the taurus.

I vote Browning / FN Hi-Power as well. You can pick up "South African Manufacture" KRD 17 round mags for the Hi-P from CDNN for about $15 each.

Take a look at some of the competition models from CZ.

Another option might be one of the semi-custom Beretta 92 series pistols like the Elite II.

Browning Hi-Power (Belgian) "T"-Series. Mec Gar mags hold 15 & fit flush. You'll pay a premium up front but like the Python you can expect the value to increase over time. For a great gun that doesn't meet the Python comparison you can't go wrong with a CZ. I've fired several models that are tack drivers with the factory fixed sights.

SIG 226 stainless or the Sig X-Five (the top end one has an adj trigger) and it's a very nice gun. I'm happy with both of mine - and I haven't upgraded either one.

Beretta Steel-I (probably their best except for special commemoratives), or their Elite II... here's their page on the Steel-I, which is in principle, available by special order as a SA only gun:

Get a CZ SP-01 Shadow. Or you could get one of their fancy competition models like the tactical sport.

These guns are of superb quality, design and manufacture. (To my mind only separated by personal preference.)
Plastic guns:
Glock

Superb designs that it seems silly to leave off any list of high quality 9mms.

I've owned about every kind mentioned here except Glocks, can't get into those. For the last few years I have owned only two hi-cap 9mm's and both are CZ-75's. They are the keepers here.

Before the Glock types go all teutonic on me, I find that they do not fit my hand shape well. I cannot comfortably get a good sight picture quickly. I'm certain they are fine firearms to those who adore them, I just am not one of them.
