Have you ever been told NOT to carry

Have you ever walked in a place or been somewhere, where you were legally aloud to carry but an employee or somebody ask you to leave it in your car?

OK, I'm not trying to pick a fight here, but why on earth would you want to walk around in public with a loaded gun openly exposed? If you ask me you are risking a confrontation, as some crack head or gang banger might decide to jump you from behind and run off w/your gun. I carry, but concealed, as it is the law in Maine, AND just good common sense. Plus if you carry openly, you end up winding up old church ladys and others, who might not like handguns. Public image is huge right now. Out of sight, out of mind.

I've carried open several times. granted I live in a smaller rural town, about 5000 people and it's a farming comunity so most everybody grew up around guns, but I never even get a second look. I also have training in weapons retention and I try to be aware of people around me. and I usually wear it closer to the front and I let my arm hang as much as possible to make it harder for people to sneak up and surprise me. I've gone into buisnesses and they never said anything, but if they did I'd tell them I won't give them my buisness ever again.

Nope, maybe because noone ever knows I am carrying. Usually not even the people I am with at the time.

Arizona has done it right. In Texas, we must conceal, and if you accidentally allow it to be seen, then it is considered branishing, and you can get in real trouble. I guess the theory is it would scare those little old ladies. The summers are 100 degrees. Only way to carry concealed is with a fanny pack (every police officer knows you are carrying) or as I do with a Kel-tec .380. My Sig 239 in .357 Sig is too big to carry in my back pocket.

For those of us who are law abiding, tax paying citizens, they should let us carry openly. A bad guy is going to jump us if he sees we have a gun strapped to our waist? Don't think so.

By the way, I love 45's in 1911 (have a bunch), but too big for my back pocket also.

I suspect that nine times out of ten if you are OC the average person just assumes you are one sort of LE or another. Of course, it could be argued that a law abiding armed citizen is an extension of LE.

If it ain't posted, then you can tell them to pound sand!!

There's a gunshop in Avondale, Straight Shooter by name, whose owner tried to tell me that it was against federal law to carry in a gunshop. He was not posted so I told him to pound sand!! He didn't have what I was looking for anyway, so I left, telling him that I would never spend a dime in his store again!! Well, he must have looked it up or talked to his bottom feeder because when I drove by there the next time, he had a sign in his window!! And no cars in the parking lot either I might add!!

Why would I want to? Because I want to.

If you let some "gang banger" take your gun, you're not paying attention to what's going on around you. Get your head where it belongs.

I carry concealed. I open carry. Which depends on how I feel at the moment.

As for those "little old church ladies" who don't like guns, they already don't like guns. Who cares what they think? Do you think they're going to say to themselves, "Well gee. I haven't seen a gun lately. I think I'll vote pro-gun now."

On the other hand, I've had a number of people ask me, "Can I do that too? I mean can I carry a gun?" Which gives me an opportunity to talk to them about the subject.

No, nobody has ever asked me to leave. (Which is the same as asking me to take my gun outside.)

K-Mart

Him: 'Scuse me sir is that a real gun and if so is it loaded?

Me: Yes and yes.

Him: Can I ask you to unload it?

Me: I'd rather not even take it out of the holster. If a cop were to walk around the corner and see me with it in my hand he might shoot me.

Him: Then I'll have to ask you to leave. We don't like loaded guns in the store.

Me: Fair enough.

So I went and spent my money somewhere else. No big deal. They weren't posted but why become confrontational / tell them to pound sand? It would serve no purpose other than to make gun owners look bad. I was not confrontational and respecting his right to be terrified (on private property) defused the potential bad situation, and may have left him with a somewhat decent impression of me and gun owners in general.

No gangbangers have snuck up on me either.

I lived in VA for a year or so and OC'd quite regularly. I got some strange looks now and then and some interesting comments from people in check-out lines etc. When I'm in a state where my PA permit is reckognized, I usually carry concealed b/c I'd rather not explain to everyone I come accross that I am not an LEO and that it is still perfectly legal.

Actually in AZ that is not true. If an employee asks you to leave your gun outside or to go out and put it in your car and you refuse, you have committed criminal trespass. If another customer asks you, you can tell them to pound sand but if it is an employee you must comply.

tomh1426 - Aren't you afraid someone would see you leaving your gun in the car and steal it while you were away???? If I were to carry in open view (Funny! I live in New York State, my next view would be from a jail cell), I would just leave the establishment rather than risking leaving my gun in the car since everyone around would be wise to the situation.

Except that any business can ask you to leve or bar you from entrance at any time. Unless you were willing to go to the trouble and expense of hiring a lawyer and suing them for discrimination you would have no recourse but to leave. If you refused you would be arrested or at the very least escorted out by police.

One thing worries me...

Although I am a resident of Illinois and being such means I can't do jack squat about my family's personal safety unless I'm in my house or on my property the thought of open carry has left me with one question: Wouldn't a person who carries openly automatically become target number one during an armed robbery, murder, etc? That's why I like the idea of concealed carry. You have the element of surprise enabling you to neutralize the threat quickly with minimal chance of personal injury or death.

went to a nightclub the other night, and they were using those metal detector wands on everyone at the door, my buddy was CCing a .380 Government and I had 4" 1911, we were told we wernt allowed in strapped. I guess he really wanted to go inside so he put it in the car. I left, and probably wont ever go back there.

Here in commiefornia you can't get a permit to carry unless you are a talk show host or a US senator.

That is a valid, hypothetical question. But since it is hypothetical one could just as easlily pose the question that "couldn't carrying openly be just as likely to prevent the same crime." If the bad guy saw there were other armed people on the premises he would lose that sense of superiority his own weapon gave him and think twice. He would probably decide there are easier targets elsewhere.

You guys must have an awful lot of talk show hosts and Senators - last time I checked, CA had issued well over 50,000 permits.
