In a way, he's lucky. In a way, he's extremely unlucky - what's the chance that a ricochet would come directly straight back like that?

This was posted over on THR. Somebody determined that the projectile, or what was left of it, was traveling only about 190 fps based upon the sound analysis and impact timing. That is still pretty fast. They also figured it was about 90 meters (100 yards).

Was it the projectile that came back or a piece of the target?

More than likely it was the bullet (what was left of it). Those .50 BMG rounds have a "soft" steel core. More than likely it was the core that made it back to him.
If you look at the video closely the bullet takes a one-hopper before it hits him in the head. You can see dirt kicked up in front of his bench just before he gets smacked. I think he would've been really hurt if it hadn't hit the ground first.

How do you know those rounds had a soft steel core? Just what .50 bmg round has a soft steel core?

The guy that got hit posted over on THR under the humerous and appropriate monaker "HeadshotWillie". He said it was regular .50 BMG ball ammo, I forget what the military designation for it is, but it does have a "soft" steel core under the jacket. The armor piercing rounds have a harder steel core.

The link works but its slow as in real slow. I was married to an ER nurse and she had a lady come in with a head wound from the same thing- shooting steel. Gotta make sure if you shoot steel that it is angled downward so any bullet hits the ground before flying off to parts unknown.

One of my friends shot a steel plate on accident with his 223 from about 20yards away and as soon as he fired he yelled out in pain. the base of the projectile had bounced back and hit him in the leg. lucky it didnt pierce but it did give a nice bruise. Even luckier was that it didnt hit me who was standing beside the moron

Regular .50 BMG ball is a lead core bullet with a copper jacket with no steel core. Maybe you could find the military designation for "soft steel core" ammo, but I have never seen any. M33 is considered a mild steel core, but that is not regular ball.

I dunno, but at any rate, the guy that got hit mentioned looking for the "steel slug", so it must've had a steel core. I asked him if it was regular ball or AP, and he said regular ball. That leads me to believe it was something like M33 which is shown as the first round on the left (a recovered slug) of this picture that he was shooting. If there's lead core ball that is more abundant then I apologize for the confusion by calling that "regular ball". I was just repeating what the guy that shot it mentioned.

I don't think lead would've bounced back that far and that fast anyway, it would've probably pancaked and splashed some, but would've stayed pretty close to the target I think, but I could be wrong about that.

EDIT: For those that aren't getting the link, you have to "right click --> Save As," and then open it up

Video - Guy hit in head by .50 cal ricochet

Check it out. The shot was taken at a steel plate and SHOULD have penetrated it, but it ricoched. You can hear it coming and see dust kick up when the bullet hit the ground just before smacking the shooter.

When I worked for Michigan Armament I took some of their .380s to the range. One shot came straight back and hit me in the forehead. Bad judgement in going shooting alone, good luck I wasn't injured.
