Speer Gold Dot .223

Just picked up some Speer Gold Dot .223.

It comes in a black box, with a gold stylized 's' swoop in the background and says, "Speer LE Gold Dot Duty Ammunition," on the front and, ".223 REM 64 GR GDSP," on the small ends.

The bullet truncates at the nose, where the flat tip exposes just a little bit of lead. Kind of a blend between JHP and JSP.

Anybody have experience with this stuff?

Here are some images of the box.

I didn't bring the ammo home tonight, so no pics of that just yet.

So Speer is trying to correct a situation in which the 223 is sadly lacking. That's barrier penitration. Just about all expanding 223's will break up on a car or on glass. FMJ will penitrate a soft target and keep on going, not doing as much damage as desired. So, I assume, they take the bullet and electro plate the jacket on. Good Idea.

wow. thanks Destructo6.

I'll have to look into this as it's not on their site. Must be new considering the packaging is the new style that's only been in effect for about a year.

Has anyone found any specific info on this ammo yet?

I had bought a case this week, and I'm sure it's great ammo, I'd like to see more info. I heard it will be available to the public sometime next year and should retail around $25/box.

After many searches, this thread was the only thing I found on it online, anywhere. (including the manufacture website)

Federal has been making their Tactical Bonded and Trophy Bonded Bear Claws for some time now. I don't know of a better penetrator in this caliber, esspecially for game, vs. glass, or anything else you need penetration on...

It is very new ammo. I first heard about it a few weeks ago while in AR armorers class with Greg Sullivan, Defensive Edge. He said that he has done some fairly extensive testing with it and while he really likes the ammo, it doesn't do as well against auto glass as the bonded 62gr Federal ammo. Apparently it shines everywhere else though.
