mag pouches? what works?

What you do you guys to carry extra mags?

I'm looking for a open top double to use for steel plate challenges and also a mag pouch that looks like a leatherman case for CCW.

Any ideas?

I remember seeing a couple years back this caddy type thing that held mags inside it, stacked horizontally and sideways, a lot like 6 or 7 9mm/40 hi caps. Like a big magazine, for mags instead of individual rounds, you strip out the top one and next one comes up under spring pressure. I prefer to KISS but for a shooting competitor and the thing worked thought it might be a good idea, save a lot of space and pull a fresh one from the same place each time. But would be a ton of weight that even a M-11/9 couldn't counter-balance. What the hell was the name of that? I know my old Star Ultrastar single stacks could never have been made to work in it, bases were 3x wider than the mag body. Anyway that was just an exotic choice for folks needing a hell of a lot of handgun rounds on their persons. Eagle makes those elastic wrist/forearm single pouches intended for tactical operators (probably SWAT guys with the riot or ballistic sheids), not sure the popularity of a system in shooting sports (would require a whole new technique to drill in, and any time it would buy would impede drawing time of the gun right off jump street, being the strong hand would be the most logical placement).

Fobus makes quality stuff for not much more than the cordura no-name crap. Including double, open top pouches, with a paddle. I like paddle holsters myself for easy on/off (intermittent ccw) if belt level carry is required, but at a match might as well wear them hooked on your belt. To be honest, I have no experience with open top mag pouches. For some reason wanted the retention of a flap, even those times my peice was in a 10. neoprene closed bottom IWB begging to fall out. I wonder if any mfg's or makers have open top mag pouches retained by the slot or hole in the mag body that the mag catch holds into the weapon? With a big push button release. The holsters with that catch in the trigger guard are mostly for security from disarmament but with a smooth draw. For a mag it would just be less material reqired to have, plus a slick withdrawal and positive retention for running, tussling, etc.

Your Leatherman type pouch, check Bud K, Cheaper than Dirt, etc, one of those has them (nylon) for a dollar, I remember a description saying it will hold mags, knives, flashlights, etc. You could find a replacement sheath for the Leatherman w/ logos on it for better subterfuge, or a cheap Bianchi (the rock hard, molded synthetic type, duty gear) single mag pouch. That, without some iron visibly hanging off your hip, few would associate to containing a 'clip for a pistol', could be anything.

Just some ideas and random b.s.
