POLICE: DREW'S HOT MOM PACKIN' HEAT By CINDY ADAMS, ADAM MILLER, CHRISTINE LANGDON, ROCCO PARASCANDOLA and BILL HOFFMAN -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The pistol-packin' mama of actress Drew Barrymore was busted yesterday after cops stopped her for plastering fliers in the East Village and discovered a loaded gun in her handbag. Jaid Barrymore, 53, was led away in handcuffs after cops said she screamed: "For f-ing posters you're gonna arrest me?" The raven-haired stunner was taken into custody along with 26-year-old ex-lover Paul Charnin at Houston Street and Broadway at 2 a.m. Police from the Anti-Graffiti Unit spotted the pair at the wall of a construction site, tacking up fliers promoting a concert by Charnin's alternative-rock band, Paul Cote. Police Officers Wayne Hembach and Thomas Efrom found an unregistered .357 Ruger pistol with two bullets in Barrymore's handbag. Barrymore told The Post she was carrying the gun after being stalked in the subway last week. "I explained I had legally purchased this gun in Los Angeles 10 years ago at a time Drew and I were being accosted by stalkers," Barrymore said. "Now that I'm in New York, I had neglected to re-register. I hadn't taken it out in years until recently when I felt I was being stalked again. "I took the train home. It was late. I was alone. A man chased me. And I actually hurt my arm badly when I fell in my panic to run away from him." Barrymore was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief and illegal postering. At the station house, she called her pal, former "Mayflower Madam" Sydney Biddle Barrows, and said: "I'm in jail ... and I really need help." Jaid was released without bail and ordered to appear in court July 26. Drew, who's been estranged from her mom for years, could not be reached for comment. Neighbors of Jaid, who lives with Charnin in a $2,200-a-month, fifth-floor walkup on East 13th Street, were stunned by the arrest. "It seems reasonable for her to be carrying a gun. There's probably good reason when you're someone like her," fashion designer Gary Robinson said. Charnin, who pleaded guilty to illegal postering and was sentenced to one day of community service, told The Post: "I didn't know we were doing anything wrong." He said he'd dated Jaid six years ago, "but now we're just the best of friends, we're just platonic. She's my best friend, and she's the hottest mother around." Jaid had jaws dropping in 1995 when, at the age of 49, she did a full-frontal nude spread for Playboy. That same year, she wrote a book called "Secrets of World Class Lovers," an explicit guide to lovemaking techniques. Two years ago, she shed her clothes to play the "Tiger Lady" in the R-rated flick "The Last Days of Disco." Drew, daughter of marijuana-user John Drew Barrymore and granddaughter of alcoholic acting legend John Barrymore, was practically born with vices. In her tell-all autobiography "Little Girl Lost," Drew revealed how she was boozing at the age of 9, smoking dope at 10, snorting coke at 12, entering rehab at 13 and dropping out of school at 14. A star of such hits as "The Wedding Singer" and "Never Been Kissed," Drew - who says she considers herself bisexual - has gained a reputation as an exhibitionist. She flashed her chest to David Letterman on his late-night show, did a striptease at a downtown topless club and has posed nude for Playboy and Interview magazines. ------------------ Slowpoke Rodrigo...he pack a gon... GOSSIP
CINDY ADAMS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED TO JAID AFTER HER GUN ARREST YESTERDAY you read about the arrest of Jaid Barrymore, oft called the oft- troubled mother of Drew Barrymore. Jaid was busted out of the slammer after 12 hours due to the efforts of three people: Lawyer Darnay Hoffman, lawyer Barry Slotnick and a little bit me. The story behind the story: At 2 a.m. she was putting up posters advertising her boyfriend's band. Staying out late doing dumb things is not against the law but, since it was some area where you shouldn't be putting up posters, two cops collared her for defacing property. She was handcuffed. The pistol-packing mama was then booked on gun possession. Her first call, 3 a.m., was to her friend Sydney Biddle Barrows. I've heard Jaid's calm, clear, unhysterical words on the answering machine. She said: "Sydney, this is a message if you're out of town. I'm in jail. At the 13th Precinct here in New York. I need your husband. I'll be in court later this morning, and I really need help." Sydney and lawyer husband Darnay Hoffman were asleep. Jaid's second message included the stationhouse phone number, and it, too, said simply: "Please call me immediately." Darnay, who specializes in civil proceedings, retrieved his messages 6 a.m. Minutes later he woke me and said: "I'm going there to see what I can do and to comfort her, but once you're in the system it's tough to get out." Knowing it was the weekend and this was now a felony proceeding, I gave him Barry's Slotnick's home number. We then woke up Barry, who began working the system immediately. She'd told the police her gun was legally registered in L.A. She'd gotten it years back when she and Drew were being stalked. She'd neglected to re-register in New York. She was carrying it now because she'd recently been in the off-Broadway show "The Dressingroom" and, going home late and alone, was stalked in the subway. The perp chased her so that she fell down in panic. She actually showed the still visible bruises to the cops. Anyway, in this city that never sleeps, that's the background to the tale New Yorkers read on the front page of this paper yesterday. |

The real obscenity in this whole story is:
$2,200 a month for a friggin' apartment? No wonder she could only afford two rounds to go in the Ruger! |

In NYC the average Joe would never be allowed to have a pistol license, much less a carry permit. I bet she is never prosecuted for having the illegal gun, seeing all of the high profile legal help she has.
But then people like her probably are better off without firearms, what dufus would carry a .375 with only two rounds? Geoff Ross ------------------ One reason to vote in the next Presidential election. It's the Supreme Court, Stupid! |
