new taurus 85 went to the range

Well I went to the range sat to fire my new ccw a taurus 85 ultra lite, my first shot double action at 15' was a bull, prob the most centered bull I have ever shot and all 5 I could cover with a closed fist.

Kicks like heck with +p (125 copper jacket hp) but its managable. I put 200 rounds down range and feal very good out to 40' or so. Next I am going to do a spring kit to lighten the hammer and trigger pull.

I just put 200 rounds though my newly bought used taurus 850. Went great with out a problem. This gun was a good pick up for summer pocket carry for $250. My friend also just bought a used one also and his worked great too.

Mine is a sweet-shooting piece. I've installed oversize grips and a light spring set. That 125 JHP +p is a good round for it. As you've discovered, hang on when you shoot it!

Congrats on the new purchase, and welcome to the ranks of those who love the J-Frame sized revolver. One thing I'd encourage is that you make sure and fire a whole lot through your weapon after changing springs to verify functionality. I've had a few revolvers that I've changed springs in only to find that they start giving me light strikes from time to time, and that's one of those things that you really want to know about ahead of time in a weapon that's for defense.

Personally, I'd recommend sticking with stock springs unless you're planning a lot of taget work with this revolver. It just doesn't seem worth the risk to me to change out to lighter springs if there is even the slightest chance that they will not function 100%. That's just me though, and YMMV.

500 hundred rounds is about the life expectancy of most Tauri, before they fail!

Intresting, might you elaborate on that data please, is it possible to get the source for further knowledge?

I have a used Taurus model 94 which was a range rental for 2 years and I have put 800 rounds though it and it is still going fine. It may not be a k-22 but I could not afford one of those but I am more than happy with both my used Taurus guns. I remember when I first started in handguns everyone was mad at S&W and said quality was suffering but now they are prefect? I have cheap guns that work great and I have big name guns that have broke. This will always be the case since they are man made machines, but at least I have a life time warranty with the Taurus.

Pay no attention to the 'witty repartee' or the troll. Happens along in most Taurus threads. Can't stand to let people be or be happy.People disrespect others when this kind of thing is done and add nothing of interest or of value to the threads by doing such.

Congrats on the 85 pick. Thoroughly agree with the kicks part, but it's nothing like the noise and recoil of the shorty .357 magnums.
There's something to be said for those who carry either .38 Special snubs or the magnum versions.

Have an olde 85CH that is in the 20 year ballpark and is still going strong.

These links are Taurus 85 ones or related. Ammo choices in there as well.

Until recently, the last gun I shoot when I go to the range is my Taurus 605 and I always run a box of 50 through it just to keep familiar with it as it's my CCW. The 605 is merely a Taurus 85 in .357. As I go to the range frequently I've shot considerably more than 500 rounds through it. More like 1000. In my opinion the 500 round self-destruct scenario is simply crap.

In fact I thought I'd give it a present for being so reliable and trouble-free and ordered a set of rosewood grips for it from Taurus as I prefer the look of wood grips. Currently out of stock so I'm still waiting. Probably beat my hand up more than the stock grips, but I usually wear an old leather bicycle glove (cut out finger tips) so that'll help.

I have had my 85UL for 8 years or so. I have shot over a 1000 rounds through mine though I don't shoot +p. Federal's standard 38, 110 Hydrashoks or Corbon's DPX 110 a supposedly good performers for defense. I have mine loaded with the Federals.

I have had 4 Taurus. The semi's (I had in 90's) were ok. I no longer have them. The M85 and my latest an M66 have been great. The 66 renewed my interest in revolvers as it is fun to shoot and the trigger is fantastic.

not sure where Avenger gets his info; sounds like a Taurus hater. I've had my 85 for 12 years, probably fired it 3k times, still works perfectly and is very accurate at SD range -- 21 feet or so. It's my car gun, and I never worry if I have enough gun or if it will fire when I need it to ..
