Review Choate New Tactical Stock - Remington 700 Tactical

Choate's New Tactical 700 BDL stock.

The Specs:

The stock is made of Rynite polymer and is injection-molded around a precision CNC machined full length aluminum bedding block makes a solid rigid stock. The action is rigidly held by the V-shape aluminum bedding block, the barrel floats freely and it features a 1.25" thick rubber recoil pad that has two LOP adjustment spacers. The two removable .25" & .5" spacers enable increasing the length of pull from 12.5" to 13.25". The forend has a 1.25" (3.2 cm) barrel channel for custom bull barrels. The bottom forend is a wide 2.4" and has a 10.5 rail that accepts a bipod adapter that's supplied. Recessed Uncle Mike's sling swivels are incorporated on both sides of the forend and both sides of the butt stock which provide for a number of practical carry modes. Retail price around $225. Also offered for the Savage 10 DBM rifles. Will not fit the AccuStock rifles unless you do some widening of the trigger guard inlet.

Weight: 3.7 lbs

Pictures, a Few Thoughts & Facts:

There are not any good pictures available on the net that shows what this stock really looks like in person. The pictures that are available make it look thin, cheap & unappealing. It's far from it in my opinion as you will see by the pictures.

Choate Tacical stock, Remington 700 SPS Tactical 20" bbl, 308, Sightron SIII 6-24X50 LR MD, Burris XTR Low rings, EGW 20moa base, Harris Notched Leg 6"-9" bipod, BlackHawk cheek pad, Arms Tech LLC Mag Xtender.

The Stock was a drop in fit and it took less than 5 mins to install. No fitting was required and the aluminum bedding block didn't need any clean up that is needed on some B&C and HS Precision stocks. Fiberglass molding can be very messy. Weather this will be the case with all of them, only time will tell. One problem I did run into is, the stock is thicker in the rear and will required a longer screw. Luckily I had a B-Square 700 BDL/ADL replacement screw set. It had a longer rear screw that was a perfect fit. This is an issue that Choate needs to address by offering a longer screw with the stock because the rear factory screw is clearly too short for this stock. Overall the stock was a nice fit and the back of the recoil lug fit snug against the Aluminum block, which is what you want.

A top view of the stock shows the with wide 1.25" barrel channel and very thick sides. This stock is well made, heavy & built like a tank as you will see. I gave the butt of the stock a few good whacks with a hammer with no damage what so ever. Try that with a fiberglass stock.

A view of the bottom of the forend with the 10.5" rail & bipod sling adapter supplied. The adapter slides freely in the channel and is locked down when you attach a bipod and torque it down tight in the position you prefer.

A look inside the at the V-Shape aluminum bedding block. It naturally centers the action and makes sure the action has full contact with the block. It's also great for those who would like to bed the action. The V-Shape block would be excellent for holding a good amount of bedding compound for a perfect fit.

SxS look @ the Choate Tactical beside a $400 HS Precision vertical grip stock. You can see that the grip of the stock is very large and some may find that it is a little too large for their liking. This is something to consider before purchasing.

Another view of the two stocks SxS. The middle of the grip is about the same width as the one on the HS stock. It's the bottom of the grip that is much large where you put your ring and little finger and this makes the grip feel larger. Notice the thickness of the Choate stock compared to the HS stock and the HS stock is no wimp in it's on right. The thickness of the tough Rynite polymer it's made of makes it virtually indestructible. The Choate Tactical stock is well made & built like a tank. Choate Stock Weight: 3.7 lbs - HS Stock: 2.5 lbs

The last view of the Choate stock on a 700 Tactical. The recoil pad is nicer than most pads that comes on much more expensive stocks.

Final Thoughts:

The New Choate Tactical stock is well made and offers a lot for the money. It is made of virtually indestructible Rynite polymer. Being a plastic stock and heavy will turn some people in the other direction from the get go. This stock is different from other plastic stocks as shown. The lower cost of the stock will offer a good alternative for those on a budget. I feel for the most part Choate did a very good job on this stock.

I would be willing to bet that Savage will be offering these stocks next year on some of their tactical precision rifles, maybe even Remington.

It's an accurate rifle with the HS stock on it. I haven't fire it yet with the Choate stock. The fit of the Choate stock is excellent, much better than the fit of the HS stock that was on it. I had to do some bedding block cleanup on the HS stock and do some fitting & it still doesn't fit as well as the the Choate stock does.

Chaote probably will in the future.

I know this thread is over 60 days old. However, this information may be useful to someone.

I found one here for $169.00

http://www.combatstocks.com/Choate_T...ort_Action.cfm

I am surprised that Choate didn't supply the longer action screws. When I purchased my Ultimate Varmint Stock it came with replacement front/rear screws.

Hopefully they will come out with the left-hand version soon for the Savage Short Action. I am in the process of selling my Ultimate Varmint stock to fund the Tactical Stock.

Choate

You can always expect a good stock from those guys. Expecially when you got an ex-military guy designing them. He knows what people want and delivers.

You're pretty damn good......

The Wheeling, WV Cabela's flyer has a .308 Savage with this same stock. I tried to post a link to no avail. It strangly isn't on Savage's website either???

Wow... That's better than I was expecting... but I'd rather buy the Hogue Overmold with the full length aluminum bedding.

The Choate Tactical Stock "does" have a full length aluminum bedding block (per their web site). Here's a copy/paste...

"The Tactical stock has a full length bedding block, adjustable spacer system to adjust the length of pull, rail on bottom of forend to attach a bipod and sling swivels on both sides."

Rem 700 Long Action w/Detachable Mag??

Hi All,

This is my first post here but I have been reading this forum for months collecting info for a rifle build I am planning. I realize this topic is old but hopfully my question is relavant.

I have a Rem 700 in .300 Win Mag. It has the Long Action and Detachable Mag. For some reason, Choate does not make ANY stocks that will work for this combination (LA & DM). I have called Choate directly and they have confirmed this, however the lady i talked to could not explain WHY this was so.

Does anyone have any idea WHY Choate does not make this stock (or any others) for Long Action w/Detachable Mag?

What other options do I have?

Thanks,
Marcsmn

Remington made very few DM rifles. It costs a lot of money to set up the machinerey to make a specific stock. Unless they can sell a lot of them they would have to either

A: take a big loss on producing only a few DM stocks.

B: Charge you a lot more than you are willing to pay them to make only a few stocks.

Thanks jmr40,

That makes sense. I didn't realize Remington made so few DM rifles. I thought there may be something physically preventing them from being able to make it fit or something. Which leads me to believe I can modify the Choate Tactical stock to fit the DM. I just hate the idea of hacking away at a brand new stock I just paid $200 for.

So, does anyone know of anyone who does make a stock that would accomodate a 700 LA w/DM?

I have this same stock as well. It is an excellent stock and very accurate, however, it would not fully free float my Remington 700 SPS-V in .308. I had to use sand paper on the barrel channel to get it to free float. It is now free floating but only by a few thousands of an Inch, which is enough but i wanted a stock that would free float the barrel without the use of sand paper. Maybe mine was a lemon? not sure.

I would imagine it would be possible to modify the stock. Given enough time and money most anything is possible.

long action savage

Can anybody advise if Choate is offering this stock for long action, std. trigger savages?

If so my Choate Ultimate Sniper (the green monster) may be history.

I just bought this same stock for my Rem 700 SPS Varmint. I love it I had no problem with mine the factory screws worked fine. I shot it last Saturday and shot .75 MOA, but I have shot less than that before with this same gun. I was having a bad day at the range. I shot this guys .50 Desert Eagle and had a casing hit me in the eye my day was runined after that. Learned good education though always wear safety glasses....lol any way back to stock I will post a better review when I shoot it again.

First let me say that it was this original thread that turned me on to the Choate Tactical stock.

Like was previously stated, this stock is built like a tank, no chance on breaking it. Comparing it to the original Houge stock is like night and day.

I do like the side sling mounts as the sling can be installed on either the RH or LH side. Plenty of clearance for the barrel, no problem with the trigger fit.

My SPS-T (.308) fit like a glove, the only mod or additional work, was to use Brownell's longer (allen) stock screws, and I had to cut one of them to fit so the bolt wouldn't hit (rear I beleive). The original stock screws did fit but not to my liking. I wanted them to be flush with the action and they were both a little recessed. I will say that I did copy the OP's rifle somewhat (as it does look cool and is really functional).

I really can't add to what has been said here, some NAME BRAND users look down on this stock but I feel that it is very, very competitive with B&C and HS.

Oh, the wide palm swell fits "my" hand extremely well and if buying another manufacturers stock I would have to add material to the palm swell to get the same feeling. Overall, a pretty nice stock for the price, IMHO.

That stock will be on my varmint build for sure. Can't beat it for the price. My McMillan A5 cost me double that.

Also about that sps tactical did remington change their set of tactical barrels to a real heavy barrel? I ask because it looks bigger than my 5R barrel
