Kahr MK 9 Elite 98

I just purchased a Kahr Mk 9 Elite 98. I purchased it as "new" and it functions 100%. However the night sights are just about gone, and this is supposed to be a new gun. I guess I should have done a little more research to see when the 98's were manufactured. As I said I just purchased it and it is new. Maybe it was "new old stock" I don't know. Would anyone here know about the 98's? Also will it handle +P ammo? It doesn't say in the manual or on Kahrs website. Thanks for the help.

What's the serial number? Cross check here...

Yes, it's fine to shoot +P, says so in the manual and on the Kahr web site.

Generally tritium lasts about 10 years. Kahr sights are small to start with. I believe the youngest your pistol could be is six years old (2003), but could be 11 years old now.

I've had an MK9 since they came out. It's older than dirt and, yes, I have had it long enough to dim the night sights!!

Your gun, although "new in box" probably has been in storage for, at least, a decade!!

Kahr stopped making the Elite 98 series in 2003!!!

The fact that your Meprolites, that's what Kahr factory installed at the time, have dimmed indicates that you gun is much older. Probably as old as mine!!

Not to worry though, you can get fresh NS!!

In fact, call Kahr and ask, they might send you a replacement set for free!!

At some point, Kahr changed the cut on the slide for the sights.

You can tell which cut you have by going Here.

Just figure out which you have and order the sights Here.

That is if Kahr won't send you a free replacement.

This is what you can expect from your new toy:

This was shot at 15 yards.

As touching ammo, the MK9 was designed to digest 115gr +P+ ammo loaded to 1300 fps!!!

Regular +P ammo is no problem. In fact, I've been carrying Federal stock number BPLE 115gr +P+ ammo in my MK9!!!

You may find this handy as well.

In fact, the above pic shows you the location of the dimple that indicate that the slide has the "new" cut for the sights!!

Oh, one other thing.
Avoid steel cased ammo like Wolf.
It has a tendency to take chunks out of your extractor!!
This advice comes from my direct experience!!!

denfoote thanks thats just what I was looking for...seems like they couldn't sell it as new if it's several years old, almost like going to a car dealer and getting a new 2000 vehicle in 2009. Anyway I hope they were made as well back then as they are now. Gun so far has shot flawless, although I only put 150 rounds through it so far. Thanks Again and thanks to all the other replies.

Remember, per Kahr, the gun needs 200 rounds break in!!

Have you field stripped it yet??
The procedure is straight forward, but can be tricky the first couple of times.

Any problems, give me s shout. :0

Denfoote, thanks for the 'Kahr Lube Points' picture. I just bought a new Kahr P40 about a week ago, my very first pistol, and I wasn't sure exactly where to oil it. I think I have been over oiling it, hopefully that isn't detrimental to the gun.
Also, you said Wolf ammo was bad, but how about Eagle or Winchester ammo?
Thanks for the info

Here is my rig.

The Pocket holster is the DeSantis Nemesis.

The pancake holster is the DeSantis #2

The mag pouch was made by JSHolsters.

Over oiling will attract dust and lint, eventually gumming up the works.

Eagle and Winchester ammo won't hurt one bit.

The issue with Wolf is the steel case.

The metal which the extractor is made was designed to extract brass cases, not steel!!

The steel Wolf uses is harder than the steel extractor!!

Chunks break off the tip!!!

I wish now I had the old extractor so I could take a pic of it to illustrate.

Denfoote, I field stripped the Kahr the same day I got it(last Tuesday). Although I didn't really know what I was doing, I wiped the insides of the gun clean and pretty much oiled everything, probably too much. Since then I have watched a Youtube video on how to properly clean and lubricate a pistol, and I have also come across your picture of the Kahr Lube Points. After coming across the 2 aforementioned items, I believe I can start from scratch Friday, before range time, and properly clean and lube my new gun.
-Also Denfoote, I plan on going to the range Friday and wiping out the break-in rounds, all 200 of them. I am very new too owning guns, so my question is; is 200 rounds in 1 sitting too much?
I appreciate the advice.

Naw, it's fine.
I broke mine in with 200 rounds of Wallyworld Winchester White Box all in one sitting.
Brought along a box of hollowpoints and a boresnake and carried it home!!
