Australia's Outback Hero Returns to the Screen
June 18, 2000 4:50 am EST

CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australia's outback hero Crocodile Dundee is set to make a comeback with actor Paul Hogan returning to Australia to make a third movie in the popular series, the Queensland government said on Sunday.

Crocodile Dundee III will be filmed from August at the Movie World Studios on the Gold Coast in Queensland and at other locations in the state before moving to Los Angeles.

It is 14 years since Hogan achieved international stardom with his first portrayal of the laconic bush legend Mick Dundee.

The former Sydney Harbor Bridge painter and comedian went on to make a less successful sequel in 1988, in which New York-based Dundee tackled a gang of South American drug dealers.

Produced and co-written by Hogan, Crocodile Dundee III will again star his wife Linda Kozlowski, whom he met while filming the original, with the new comedy taking Mick Dundee to Hollywood, according to Australian news agency AAP.

The Dundee character was based on Northern Territory bushman Rodney Ansell, who died last year in a shootout with police near Darwin.

Curiously, there never was an understandable account of who Rodney Ansell was or what prompted the fatal last encounter with Aussi troopers.

I think Dennis nailed this one.

It's not unusual for us to hear no more about the case -- there would have been a Territory Coroner's inquest which would hardly have raised a ripple in the other capitals.

There is some speculation he went "troppo" -- a term used to indicate a mental condition brought about by living in the Tropics too long and in too much isolation. He was, by all, accounts, a bit "weird".

Note that he opened fire on the coppers first; they weren't actually looking for him. He killed a police officer. Considering that he was an acknowledged master marksman, people feel he could have easily killed both coppers had he wanted to --- or simply walked around them. It's possible it was another "suicide by cop".

On another note, despite his facelift, Hoges is getting w-a-y too long in the tooth to play the "tough bushman" character!

Hey Bruce, you think that there is a tough kiwi to take his place?
You know when you are at a kiwi bachelor party? When a sheep jumps out of the cake.

fed168:

"tough kiwi"?

Isn't that an oxymoron, like "rush hour" or "vegetarian food" or "Japanese cooking"?

Anyway, most of the Kiwis are now living over here in Oz

And don't start me on Kiwi jokes -- I get myself into so much trouble with them .....

Have a care Bruce, some of us know you really live on the West island.

Callin Hoges "long in the tooth" makes me feel real good, he could be my kid.

'member back when the Kiwis and the Ozzies had that skirmish? The Ozzies tossed a bunch of gernades and the Kiwis pulled the pins and threw em back.

Sam, who served with both; but my liver didn't.
