Appleseed Feedback

Some of you know what this is.
I just completed an Appleseed and have earned my Rifleman.

There are a ton of questions on this forum about what is better or worse, faster, stronger, etc, etc, etc.

The skills gained at an Appleseed make many of the arguments a moot point.

Having or not having those those extra 50fps don't matter if you can't hit the target at the yardage.

No rest, no bi-pod, no bench, no bags. You and your rifle.

WOW! I've been shooting for over 35yrs. I have killed more than 70 deer.

This weekend made me a better shooter.

Thanks!

I made Rifleman at my first Appleseed, but must admit it's not as easy as I first thought. I figured, how hard can it be at 25 meters? Well I found out real quick, you have to work to do it. Glad I did it and I plan to do it yearly just to "keep in tune".

I am planning on attending the one coming up in TN.
Just out of curiosity you use open sights or scope?

I just turned 50 and wear glasses so I am kinda leaning on getting a scope.

rdmallory,
I used a 10/22 w/ a 4x scope. I've tried the distance with open and peep sites and just couldn't see them. Even with a scope you will be challenged.

Go with an open mind and disregard everything you think you already know about shooting.

You will have a blast.

hagar, yes, that was us. You have a great facility. Thanks for your support!

I did the Appleseed there a couple of months ago, and had a tough time making rifleman. Those small targets are ... small ....

Wish I knew they had the Appleseed yesterday, would not have minded doing it again. We were going to sight our Fal's in for the steel plate match in Charlotte this Saturday and did not check the website. The steel plate match is a lot of fun, we shoot it once every 3 months and it is a blast. Best time yet is 9.5 seconds for 8 steel plates at 200 yards, not mine unfortunately. If you want to come shoot it or want more details let me know. You can use any rifle you want as long as it has open sights, but the Fals rule, won first place at least 90% of the time.

hagar,

That sounds like an interesting event. Can't make it to Charlotte this coming weekend. Let me know how it turns out.

I may join MCRC, I have a place to shoot that is closer to home, but that is a great facility.

Thanks!

I went to Appleseed over the weekend. My best score was 190, on the first day. The second day my score went to 180, then to 166, then to not worth scoring, then my safety quit working. I finished out the second day on a borrowed 10/22 and did terrible.

This was my second Appleseed, maybe 3rd times a charm.

didn't make it the 1st time myself... the barrel clamp loosened up on my 10-22 over the course of the shooting... I really looking forward to trying it again with a "tight" barrel

This is more important than any hardware, gear or ammo you bring to the line and I'm glad you took it to heart. Your original post is proof positive that we can all learn something new, if we just let ourselves. Glad you had a great time and congrats on making Rifleman!

This is more common than one thinks, especially on Day 2 during the "AQT Grind". It can be easy to lose focus - your muscles are aching from Day 1, the weather (hot, cold, rain, snow) starts to wear you down, your rifle starts malfing and you get distracted during the COF, etc. Pretty soon, it becomes difficult to remember Position, The 6 Steps, Steady Hold Factors, NPOA, and cadence. Each one builds on the previous and if one is out of whack, so are all the rest that follow. As you found out, it takes persistence and concentration.

It's a climb, for sure, but the view from the top of the mountain is worth it. Keep it up. You know your high is 190 - that's almost knocking on the door! When you consistently score in the 190s, really put more effort on the 4th stage where points are doubled (you have 5 minutes on a stage-by-stage AQT to shoot 10 rounds, that's an eternity!!). Missed shots at this point are usually due to improper NPOA shifting, trigger work, and/or follow through. You'll soon hit the low-to-mid 200's consistently. And at that stage, it's just you psyching yourself out. Get in the "bubble" and finish the job!

Do you know what you're about? Find out at an Appleseed near you.
