Concealed Carry Bills Face Another Hurdle

Because of your calls and e-mails, committee hearings were held on H.B. 304 and H.B. 144 and both bills passed! The bills now move to the House Rules Committee. If your State Representative is on the Rules Committee (see Roster Number 1), please call him or her immediately and ask him or her to advance H.B. 304 and H.B. 144 to the House floor for immediate passage. And call your State Representative today (see Roster Number 2) and ask him or her to urge Rep. Calvin Smyre, Chairman of the Rules Committee, to advance H.B. 304 to the House floor for passage. You can also call the Georgia House at 404-656-5082 or 1-800-282-5800. A complete contact roster is provided below. The Rules Committee decides whether or not legislation, like H.B. 304 and H.B. 144, is placed on the House floor to be voted on. They must pass H.B. 304 and H.B. 144 out of Rules Committee before the Constitutional deadline on Tuesday so it's crucial you take immediate action. Even though the Public Safety Committee tacked on two amendments that don't allow concealed carry in courthouses or bars (establishments where more than fifty percent of their sales is alcoholic beverages), H.B. 304, by Rep. Franklin, would restore the right of self-defense to honest, law-abiding concealed carry permit holders and eliminate No Safety Zones -- such as sporting events, churches and most restaurants -- where criminals commit their offenses against citizens left virtually defenseless under the current law. GOA is hoping efforts later in the process will strip the Public Safety amendments and restore the bill to its original form, but at the moment it is vital H.B. 304 makes it out of Rules or it will die. H.B. 144, by Rep. Joyce, would allow honest, law abiding gun owners -- even if they don't have a concealed carry permit -- to have a loaded firearm anywhere in their vehicle. This would protect many Georgians who have had their handguns confiscated while traveling into an anti-gun jurisdiction where law enforcement targets citizens concerned about their self-defense. If your State Representative is on the Rules Committee, please contact him or her and ask him or her to pass H.B. 304 and H.B. 144 to the House floor for passage. Don't delay.
