Gun Owner and Firearm Registration Bill on Move in Maine
Gun Owners of America E-Mail/FAX Alert 8001 Forbes Place, Suite 102, Springfield, VA 22151 Phone: 703-321-8585 / FAX: 703-321-8408 http://www.gunowners.org March 8, 2001 Dear Maine Gun Rights Supporters, I need you to right away contact your State Senator and Representative and ask him or her to oppose L.D. 464, the Gun Owner and Firearm Registration Bill. To find out who your Senator and Representative is, please go to http://www.gunowners.org/activism.htm and under Guide to States click on Maine. You can reach your legislators by calling the House at 800-423-2900 and the Senate at 800-423-6900. The main switchboard phone number is 207-287-1400 and the fax number is 207-287-4469. At the end of this message, you'll find a pre-written message for you to use and complete contact rosters. L.D. 464 would require anyone selling a firearm -- either as a dealer or through a private sale -- to be licensed and registered with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF). And L.D. 464 would force all firearms sales to undergo the Brady Instant Registration Check, expanding the registration of gun owners and giving government an electronic record of all who purchase a firearm. This means that if the anti-gunners get their way, ALL firearms transfers could be shut down with the flip of bureaucratic switch. It has already happened many times and you can bet it will happen again. Worse yet, your personal information will be illegally stored in a federal database. In contempt of the federal law, the bureaucrats in control of the Brady Instant Registration Check continue to add the names of gun owners to their database and refuse to destroy those records. As residents in New York City, California, England and Australia know, gun registration leads to gun confiscation. If L.D. 464 passes, a dealer or private citizen who wants to sell a firearm must also: pay $200 to the BATF, submit their fingerprint to the federal government, waive their Fourth Amendment Constitutional rights and allow federal agents to search their home once a year, and they must get zoning approval and permission from their chief of police before they can sell a firearm. According to inside sources, anti-gunners are attempting to pass L.D. 464 out of the Joint Committee on Criminal Justice with an amendment that waters down the bill (possibly to only cover gun shows and not private sales) in order to amend it with the original language once the bill is on the floor later. And of course, anti-gunners so loosely define a gun show that it could mean a few vendors or only one or two firearms being sold or transferred. For example, if members of a gun club trade, buy or sell a firearm at a meeting without conducting a Brady Instant Registration Check, the entire club could face criminal penalties. Tell your Senator and Representative to oppose L.D. 464 in any shape or form and vote against it at every opportunity. If your Senator or Representative is on the Joint Committee on Criminal Justice (see Roster Number 1), please ask him or her to oppose L.D. 464. And even if your legislator is not on the Criminal Justice Committee (see Roster Number 2 for the Senate and Roster Number 3 for the House), please contact your Senator and Representative and ask him or her to oppose L.D. 464. Please act at once. Sincerely, Denis Fusaro Director of State Legislation ***** Pre-written message to your Senator ***** Senator ___________________________ Maine State Senate 3 State House Station Augusta, ME 04333 Dear Senator, I urge you to oppose L.D. 464, the Gun Owner and Firearm Registration Bill, at every opportunity. I oppose this expansion of government power and regulation, especially since the U.S. Constitution guarantees that my Second Amendment rights shall not be infringed. Freedom is not a loophole. Do not support L.D. 464 or any other bill designed to register private sales of firearms. Gun Owners of America will keep me informed on the outcome of this attempt to register gun owners in Maine.
