Preview of Coming Attractions: McCain on Guns
By Susan Jones
CNSNews.com Morning Editor
May 09, 2001

(CNSNews.com) - Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) will appear on-screen in more than 2,500 theaters nationwide this summer. He's starring in a 30-second gun safety advertisement, sponsored by Americans for Gun Safety, a group that is actively working to close what it calls the gun show loophole.

In the ad, McCain urges parents to keep their firearms locked up and he urges kids to tell an adult if they overhear another kid talk about shooting anyone. Wednesday's USA Today notes that the ad - delivered by a politician in a movie theater - is a rare phenomenon in a forum that's more often used to pitch popcorn, soda and movie previews.

The gun safety campaign, starring John McCain, starts May 18, and it is not getting rave reviews from groups that support gun rights.

"By urging parents to lock up their guns, McCain would have Americans lock up their safety as well," said Erich Pratt, the director of communications for the Gun Owners of America. Pratt said legislation that forces homeowners to look for keys to gun locks or to fiddle with combinations to gun safes when their lives may be under attack is a very dangerous idea.

He said McCain should let law-abiding Americans choose how best to defend their own families.

McCain Gun Control Bill in the Works

Sens. McCain and Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) reportedly are working together on what they call a "compromise" gun bill, which is expected to be introduced in the current session of Congress.

According to a report in the Feb. 8, 2001 edition of Roll Call, a Capitol Hill newspaper, the legislation is likely to include a reworked version of the gun show loophole (requiring background checks on those who buy weapons at gun shows); mandatory trigger locks; and more funds and support for the law enforcement community, aides to both Senators told the newspaper.

"This would be an opportunity to chart a third way on stopping gun crime by dedicating more resources to enforcing existing gun laws while also fixing some of the loopholes that persist in those laws," Lieberman spokesman Dan Gerstein is quoted as saying.

McCain's interest in gun legislation, and his ability to generate headlines, may revive public debate about an issue that doesn't loom large in the current Republican agenda.

"With Senator McCain joining Senator Lieberman on this debate, you are all but guaranteed it is going to register on the public's radar screen," a senior Senate Democratic aide told Roll Call.

Americans for Gun Safety, the group that is sponsoring McCain's movie theater debut, describes itself as a nonpartisan, not-for-profit advocacy organization that supports the rights of individuals who own firearms for sport, protection, and collection.

"We also believe that with rights come responsibilities," according to a statement on the AGS website. "We seek stronger new gun laws and tougher enforcement of current laws. Our goal is to help keep guns out of the hands of criminals and kids, and to make guns safer in the home."

McCain in recent months has squashed - but not eliminated -- speculation about whether he'll run for president in 2004.

Are any of the above going to speak out against restrictions on types of guns the law-abiding are allowed to own?

I don't think so.

That they call the private sale a "loophole" does not reflect much in the way of their respect for an individual right to own guns.

Leiberman & McCain, here's a novel idea. Try dedicating more resources to enforcing existing CRIMINAL laws! That'll solve a real problem, not an imagined one.

See "Project Exile". There's a program with demonstrated results. But I guess you're not interested in reducing crime, are you? You'd rather make more gun owners into criminals.

McCain is a serious RINO (Republican in Name Only) and I think the next election will be his last.

Well, as a fine, upstanding, and politically involved citizen I feel it's my duty to write to Senators McCain and Leiberman to express my displeasure with their proposal.

And since all of you wish to do the same here is the contact information for each of them.

Leiberman: lieberman.senate.gov (website)

I have firmly believed for a long time that when McCain (and Kerry & Kerrey) came back from Vietnam, he decided that if he couldn't beat the Communists, he might as well join them. McCain also hates the First Amendment (and the rest of the Bill of Rights, and Constitution), just as do his other fellow travelling komrades in the Senate and Congress, mainly Democrats, but some other wimpy Republicans, too.

John Glenn is their patron Komrade. He switched over when he came home from Korea.

Oh well....

A couple of thoughts

Maybe we should start writing theater chains and owners now and let them know what kind of lost revenue they'll be looking at if they run these ads. That way they'll have a better idea how much they will need to charge McKelevey in order to make up for gun owners taking their business somewhere else.
