Okla. Man With Assault Rifle Kills 1

By AARON COOPER
Associated Press Writer

EDMOND, Okla. (AP) — A man with an assault rifle fired randomly at people and houses as he walked through a a middle-class neighborhood Friday, killing one man and critically wounding another before being killed by police.

The shirtless gunman hid behind bushes as police arrived, taking aim at them, police Chief Dennis Cochran said.

Cochran said there was no indication the gunman was looking for a particular person.

``He would see a person and he would approach a person and shoot them,'' Cochran said.

The man, a 42-year-old Edmond resident, carried an M-1 Garand rifle that dated to World War II, police spokeswoman Glynda Chu said. Police did not release his name, nor did they give the name of the victim who was killed in his back yard.

After the shootings about 6:30 p.m., police went door to door to check for other victims but found none. Residents in the middle-class neighborhood west of downtown talked in their front yards as police investigated. Edmond is about 15 miles north of Oklahoma City.

``A lot of children were out, people were out, home from work, a beautiful Friday afternoon'' Chu said. ``It's very sad, but could have been a lot worse.''

The wounded man, 61-year-old George Polifka, had been swimming in his pool and was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital in critical condition, Chu said.

A neighbor of both victims, Frankie Myatt, said she went inside and locked her doors when she heard about the incident on her police scanner.

``Then I looked outside my window and the guy was standing right in front of my house,'' she said.

The shirtless man appeared calm as he walked past, she said. Myatt said she heard five shots.

``It was quite scary,'' she said.

Since when is a politically correct antique rifle with an eight round fixed magazine considered an assault rifle?

That's what I was wondering. It fits none of the definitions (correct or incorrect) of what an assault rifle is.

Seems that according to the anti's, every semi-auto rifle is an "assault rifle" or "machine gun" and every bolt action or single shot is a "sniper rifle".

Attention:

To the few DCM stalwarts, 1000-yd High Power competitors, and benchresters who may not have seen this dust cloud on the horizon: A 60+ year-old, fixed magazine, eight shot, semiauto WW2-vintage service rifle chambered in the venerable and respected .30-'06 round is now an "assault rifle". Obviously, M1A's and AR's already are. Ruger Deerfields, Marlin Camp Carbines, Remington 7400's, Ruger 10/22's and their ilk certainly fit this "new and improved" "assault rifle" definition. To the "It doesn't concern me 'cause I just bird hunt and shoot skeet" crowd: Is a Remington 1100 or a Benelli Black Eagle an "Assault Shotgun"? For the guys standing quietly on the fringes while others were stripped of their HK autoloaders, AK's, SKS's, Daewoos, Valmets, Galils, FALs and AUGs; you're next.

You couldn't be more right, Tamara. Unfortunately, The sportsmen that think they will never come after the guns that they shoot won't realize that we were all right until their shotguns and single shot rifles are the last guns out there (and being yanked from their hands).

Back about 1990, my work took me to Macon, Ga. I immediately subcribed to the local newspaper as well as to the Atlanta Constitution, for a wider view.

One of their first articles I read headlined, "Government sells assault rifles to NRA members". Further reading revealed that the DCM was selling surplus M1's to any NRA member who was a member of a recognized rifle club.

I wrote the reporter pointing out the error and was told, "Well, that's the way I interpret it.". Cancelled my subscription the following day.

I found out later the paper was known locally as the "Atlanta Constipation" because of what it was full of.

And, note that the above article carries an AP by-line. Just as the ACLU is the legal wing of the Left, so the AP in their media outlet for intentionally baised stories.

Actually, since the Cox Corporation-owned Bobbsey twins of yellow journalism in the Empire State of The South are formally known as the "Journal-Constitution", the full and correct epithet is "The Atlanta Urinal-Constipation". The three things I miss least about Atlanta are the traffic, Cynthia Tucker and Tom Teepen.

If I caught somebody in the act of shooting people on the road, and I
had a rifle nearby, we'd probably hear about 'vigilante' home owners
'taking the law into their own hands'.

As Tamara said,

All shooters better wake up. (This means YOU Duck Hunters, Trap and Skeeters, and everyone else). I am not a commie under every bed, reactionary types. But let me tell you what..there is a big, BIG surprise coming straight at you. Think your prized Remington 700 is safe? It's not a military weapon, it is a hunting rifle, they will never take this away. Guess what? It was on Chuckie Schuemer's short list for abolishment. Your beloved deerslayer is the rifle used by the armed forces and PD's as their official sniper rifle. You can't be trusted with one of those! Pump shots guns? Why Winchester, Mossbergs and Remingtons were all used by the Army in various wars. Can't say when a madman will loose it and use it to clear out a trench full of kindergardeners. Bye, bye!

As Those Who Must be Obeyed keep pushing the country to become more "European". What do you really think was behind the beret thing? Our soldiers now look, shall I say it? Dare I? Yes, they look like EUROPEAN SOLDIERS! Isn't that special? (Sorry, I worked my ass of for a black one back when. And yes I'm cranky about this)

Along with the image thing, the laws will become more European. Like, NO firearm that has ever been used by the military for any purpose can be owned by a civilian. (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, France). No ammunition that was used as a military caliber can be owned by a civilian. Who is that? France, Spain, Italy, Austria.

It's coming. When you wake up some day, gather your stuff and take it to the smelter... REMEMBER..WE TOLD YOU SO!

With all the bravado and bluster that floats around, can you look in the mirror and really ask yourself will you really make them buy your guns with blood? Can you and will you defend the Constitution when it means you may loose everything up to and including your life? Take a moment and look at what the Founding Fathers gave up. And see if you can do that.

Jeez, did I just depress myself.
