(SC) Columbia man uses sister's memory to help fight off robber

How to clean up the gene pool: ". . . And that's why I waited until the opportunity that he tucked that gun in his pants, and I just shot him."

In 1997, tension filled a Richland County courtroom as two men were sentenced to life, the maximum, for the murder of Fatz Cafe employee Peggy Numberger.

Dennis Cosentino was in the courtroom for the sentencing, and he recalled it this weekend as he stared down the barrel of a handgun being pointed at him by a young man robbing his store on Rosewood Drive.

Cosentino is Peggy Numberger's brother, "I just said to myself, I've had enough happen to our family with my sister's murder and all back in '97. I said, nothing else is going to happen to this family, and I said, I'm going to stop him. And that's why I waited until the opportunity that he tucked that gun in his pants, and I just shot him."

Cosentino fired two gunshots at the robber as he fled the store. One found its mark. A short time later, Columbia Police arrested Jeremy Bray and his girlfriend Victoria Domingez after Bray checked into Providence Hospital claiming he'd been wounded in a drive-by shooting.

Police Captain Steve Conley says investigators have now charged Bray in a series of three holdups all in rapid succession Saturday night, first at the DCP Food Mart on Main, then Planet Smoothie in Five Points and at Cosentino's store, World of Gifts.

Police are also investigating whether Bray was involved in an armed robbery at the Capitol Newsstand July 1st. Captain Conley says Bray has a distinctive tattoo on his neck, and he matches the description of a man who held up the bookstore.

Police will conduct a photo lineup before filing charges. Cosentino, meanwhile, will not be charged. Police say he was clearly acting within his rights.
