Enterprise Phasers...

Anybody catch the season opener of Enterprise? Looks like a good one. It was interesting to see the "old" phasers that looked a little bit like something out of Buck Rogers. They shoot intermittent beams instead of a steady stream of laser fire.

As we know, whatever sci-fi can dream up, science often makes good on. So call up your gun store this morning and get on the waiting list for "them newfangled blasters on that space show."

Actually they were plasma pistols at first, then they got phasers.

The ultimate in police weaponry. Think about it, you can zap a person without fear of cardiac arrest and then arrest them. Then again, it can be abused when it's set on "disappear" mode and citizens, miscreants, and the neighbor's cat vanish. Guess the sergeant will have to do a weapons inspection at debriefing...

I always liked the phasers incorporated into the crew's communicators (~ 3"x3"). I want a similar setup in a beeper chassis!

Who gives a crap about the phasers, did you see the cannons on that Vulcan chick? I think I'm in love!

Halffast,

You mean there was more to the show than just those "cannons?"

Always been a trekkie. I liked the plasma pistols better than the phasers. The plasma pistols seem to be a bit more hard-core.

I was hoping they would start off with conventional weapons.

The show seems like it will great!

Guyon,

If you're interested in sci-fi technology becoming real, then read this article on the current state of transporter technology: http://www.space.com/businesstechnol...on_010926.html

papercut,

Good to see a Cobb Countian on the site. I'm from Marietta originally. Thanks for the article. I liked that Einstein called this phenomenon "spooky action at a distance."

I dream about a teleporter every morning when I drive to work. Or especially when I drive four hours to visit my mom. Beam me up Scotty!

BTW: The Vulcan girl IS hot. Spock was cool, but he wouldn't be quite the same in a wet t-shirt.

What channel is this show on? I like sci/fi, but I've never seen this one.

Does anybody remember the DS9 episode where there was a ground fight, and the annoying little Ferengi kid fresh out of Starfleet got his leg blown off?

Anyways, at one point one of the good guys got down behind a berm with a phaser rifle (the longarm) and something spectacular happened. He hit a button, and what should pop up but a GUNSIGHT. It was a cheesy piece of green translucent plexiglass or something, with a crosshair. But it was an honest-to-God *gunsight*.

With the amount of point-shooting they do in the Trek universe, I keep expecting somebody to load up the "Jeff Cooper" program in the nearest holodeck and get totally chewed out .

I mean, the Bushnell Holosight or equivelent is an order of magnatude more advanced than anything in the Trek universe in terms of sights*. It's sad.

(* With the exception of the X-Ray sight that showed up in the last season of DS9, attached to a genuine rifled firearm with the transporter attached to the barrel like some sort of psycho muzzle brake so it could shoot through walls without putting holes in anything but the target. THAT was a cool toy!)

Okay - some one better post a pic of these Cannons pretty danged soon.

Now, I am not a Trekker. I'm a Star Wars fan. Episode 4 Fan.
What you need is a handy Blaster at your side. A less elegant weapon for a less civilized time.

Han Solo's Blaster

George (and anyone else interested): The Gun Rack in Florida lists the Star Wars conversion as one of the jobs they're willing to do to Mauser Broomhandles. Think about that for a sec: go out to the range with a nice aluminum case, pull out what everybody's been conditioned to think of as a ray gun, and start throwing tracers downrange. Brooms come in 9mm, and so does tracer...

You gotta respect a character who says " hocus pocus and ancient religions...there's nothing like a good blaster at your side, kid..." or something to that effect when Luke is training with the drone in the original movie. I have to watch it again. Long live Solo!
I was pleasantly surprised at all the shooting in the new Star Trek episode. I was expecting another, even more PC version of the "New Generation". I guess the Borg babe worked so well they stuck in a Vulcan version. pant, pant

hkg3 there was one example of "ancient" technology in the 1st Enterprize episode.
The looked like some sort of chrome plated over & under 12 gauge the farmer in Brokenbow used on the Klingon.
Blew him right off his feet, but of course it wasn't a phasor, so they had him up and around again by mid show.

Now back to the cannons. I'm ready for more details...

Wilder Bill,
Seems like this shotgun has a "power pack" of some sort that really looks like a detachable mag... I want one!

Hold your fire about the hottie, guys, you're talking of Spock's mama, here! (Got it? Her name's T'Pau!)

The Borg would wipe them out in so little time there wouldn't be substance for an episode, thought...

George, this page has a rather seductive picture of the Vulcan in question. Crop her hair short, and put some pointy ears on her. Then stick her in a shower in a wet t-shirt and watch her seductively rub some sort of space-age soap all over her body. That's why all the guys are still drooling.

Sorry to burst your bubble Thibault, but Spock's mother was a human, while his father was Vulcan.

Right, as I recall T'Pau was the leader of Vulcan during the original ST era. I also thought Enterprise was a good show, well written. (But as usual, UPN inserted too darn many commercials.)

Mmmm...blasters. Here is one I built up on a horrible old Broomhandle in 7.63 by 25mm. Completely refinished, new springs (the bore is still bad, but for this use it was perfect), and functional. For the well-heeled Star Wars fan And yes, the ones I've done in 9mm look pretty darn cool in low light with tracers...

Check my web site under "props" for more of that sort of work. Oddly enough, I find it more profitable to build blasters than what I started my shop to do (competition buildups and tuning for CAS and IPSC firearms)...a strange world we live in.

Jim March- Well in that case, it may have been a primitive sight. But if you recall in a previous episode where Kira was fighting with rebels, she had a rather advanced sighting system for long range shots. It had what looked like a monitor with a close up of the guy she was aiming at, with cross hairs that moved till she got lined up with the shot she wanted.
Also, if you read the tech manuals,(and yes I am geek enough to do that,) you will find that there are tracking sensors in the phasers, so all you have to do is point, and it does the rest of the aiming.
My guess to why the cheese site, is since there were so many targets, he needed a more positve sighting system up close.

I like her Maxim photo better... A spock haircut on her? Thats a CRIME! I guess trekkers don't mind about all that stuff...

Now, in STAR WARS she would have been dressed in a brass bikini with a few chains, thigh high boots, and armed with some sort of very large carbine. THAT'S one of the reasons I like Star Wars better!

Then there is the wookie vs warf:
