Custom 1911 with Boron Carbide coating pic
Built by Pete Single
Unfortunately, since I'm a bit far away from home, I've yet to touch my new 1911!! Can't wait to get home and shoot it! Boron carbide is a dark finish that's VERY thin (2-3 micron's, one micron is about .00005, which translates to .00015... hard chome is about .0002-.0005). It's applied at only 250 degrees which will not temper the steel. In addition, it's also very corrosion resistent It's probably the most durable dark finish on the market. Proprietor of the finish is Bodycote Diamond Black. This pistol was displayed at the SHOT show this year as a representation of boron carbide. Les Baer Slide and Frame Custom Pete Single Magwell Bomar rear sight Custom fabricated front sight with tritium insert Kart Barrel Ed Brown extended mag release Ed Brown safety Ed Brown slide stop Ed Brown beavertail Wilson Bushing Wilson hammer 30 lpi front and rear checkering Polished hard chrome finished with Boron Carbide coated over top etc etc

Another beauty, ArmySon. How do you afford that stuff on Gubmint pay? Nevermind, none my damn business.
Good to "see" you and hope Unkie Sam isn't treating you too roughly.

Son,
The pistol looks great. Man we have missed your insight. Not just here but over at 1911forum. If you haven't yet tried this site, go to www.pistolsmith.com it's a lot of the ol' gang from 1911forum. Anyway, it's good to know that you are safe! J Scott |

It has been a long while since I have seen any pics or posts from Son. Every time I see people posting gangs of 1911's to show off their wares I always expect to see Son taking up a page or two. This is about the 5th or 6th really nice 1911 that I have seen pics of from him. He is without question packing big heat in the 1911 department.
Keep 'em coming Son. Nala |

The finish is beautiful, but I prefer my 1911's to look like this...

Are all those bills under that fine handgun representative of the price?

Wow.
I don't normally like 'shiny' finishes on pistols, but that is gorgeous. Is it just me, or does it look like the Kimber Eclipses? |

Great... it's gonna take me a while to clean up the keyboard after that one.
Hey Son, you wouldn't happen to own a Benchmade 770 would ya? I know the gun would match mine PERFECTLY. You are a lucky man, man!

Son . . .
Great to hear from you. I hope the "call up" tour continues to go well. Your new 1911A1 is simply wonderful -- as beautiful as it is functional. I am truly envious.
By the way, as our personal 1911A1 guru, what do you think about these new Valtros (http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/...hreadid=122420 and http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/...hreadid=122304)? As always, your opinion would be much valued and appreciated, even if you have not fired one yet. Best regards -- Roy

Wasn't that pic (or one very similar) posted several months ago?
Wait, this topic STARTED several months ago! Disregard. |

Lets see. . . initial post that started the thread was posted 03-02-2002.
Is there any point in responding to these old threads? Shake

Yes I own a Benchmade 770. However, mine has a green handle.
As for the Valtro, I've never fired or handled one so I can't give you a good opinion on it. However, a good buddy of mine who also is a damn fine smith rates them around the same tier as a Les Baer or Wilson.

You can get your firearm looking like that relatively easily but it'll cost you. First, the flats must be highly polished. Next, a hardchrome finished was applied. Then, the last step was to apply the boron carbide.
The finish was applied by Bodycote Diamond Black. I believe you need a gunsmith to send off your firearm for them to accept the work. Correct me if I'm wrong. PS Forgot to add that the trigger is one of STI's ultralight trigger

Boron Carbide helps with corrosion resistance. The bodycoat reps say so. BUT, when they were talking about using it on knives for corrosion resistance, they said because the coating is not on the edge, and due to the thinness of the coating, rust can go underneath the coating where it is exposed at the edge of the knife and go beneath the coating, but a little preventative maintenance, ie wiping it down occasionally and not leaving it out wet, will take care of it. I don't think i ever recall seeing any rusty guns from people who did anything to take care of them. Boron carbide does prevent rust as the surface is blocked off from moisture and gunk, but it can get underneath the edges where the boron carbide is off.
BC is a 91 rockwell ceramic coating. I know they experimented with a rainbow version, and the black version actually shows the finish underneath. i did a custom handle for a camillus arclight that was sandblasted and then coated black. the black on there was a very nice flat, dark matte black. I have also seen very shiny BC coated knives that looked like black mirrors. It is very scratch resistant...mirror finished knife with BC in pocket with change and keys, no harm to the finish according to some articles in Blade magazine. I want to do up a 1911 and have it BC black. just not sure if im gonna go shiny or flat yet..maybe one of each |
